Dermatology tomorrow. Scared!

Hi all I'm 34 year old female. 3 weeks ago I felt like I had a spot on my back that needed squeezing a sore sort of feeling when a spot is brewing. Asked my partner to do this and was told the skin around my mole looked sore and inflamed. This mole has been there for atleast 8 years or so. Not big under 5mm not irregular shaped but dark brown (not quite black) anyway saw GP same day who sent me to teledermatology for images to be taken which was 2 weeks ago. Now I have face to face with dermatology this week and I'm terrified. The redness around skin and soreness has gone completely. It only lasted about 3 days but my mole is left with some sort of small slightly red looking bump which I can only explain is on the side of it but part of the mole. It feels like there is a bump under it. The dark brown mole itself is actually the same in that its still looking pretty round/oval and looks one colour but I'm so worried about the little reddish bump the has formed on side of it. No itching or bleeding atall. I'm scared it's always been a melanoma and now it's late stage. I've also developed a horrible cold and chesty cough in this time so I'm worried it's all linked. I've had to be signed off work with stress and anxiety. Prior to 3 weeks ago all seemed normal I hadn't noticed any changes atall. I often notice my back maybe once a month when I catch a glimpse getting out the shower so this change is fast which is what's worrying me massively. Are all sudden changes melanoma? Please help. Everyone seems to say on forums fast change is the worst. It hasn't changed again in the last 1-2 weeks but still so worried about inital fast change. I can't seem to find a post with a change similar to mine x

  • It's quite normal to worry about every ache and pain when going through cancer investigations. Your symptoms could be caused by a number of things - stress or another, unconnected, health condition. Being connected to your mole would be less of a probability. Although you've had the mole a long time the changes have been recent so there is much less of a chance of a spread internally. Also, how the mole behaves above the skin doesn't indicate a spread - it's how it behaves below the skin that matters. This means it has to grow deep into the lower layers of tissue for it to be able to spread.

I suggest you monitor your pain symptoms for a week or two and if the problem persists, go see your GP again. If they think it could be an unconnected problem they can treat it or make further investigations whilst you await the biopsy results.

As for consultant's comments 're moles - most don't comment because even they can get it wrong. Others comment and then patients get anxious. Sadly, they can't please every patient so they tend to wait for the biopsy results.

Good luck tomorrow. I'm sure all will go well and then take it easy and recover well. It's a long wait for results so keep busy and distracted.

  • Thanks so much angie. I also asked my mom if she has ever noticed changes she's seen my back on a loads of occasions and she said it's been the same for years which gives me slight comfort meaning no noticeable change to either of us until 4 weeks ago.

Can I ask how long is recovery time from biopsy?

  • It depends where on your back it is. I had one removed from between my shoulder blades where the skin is taut. I was told not to drive, stretch or lift anything heavy for at least a week or the stitches would pull and the wound open. The stitches were dissolveable so it healed quite quickly.

  • Thanks Angie, yes mine is a similar place not quite right in the middle though. I did plan on driving to the local hospital and back they didn't tell me not to so I assume I would be ok to make the 10 min drive straight home. Thank you once again for replying. Will update once results are in as I hate a thread without an outcome lol

  • I would probably reconsider your transport to the hospital. They didn't tell me not to drive when the excision appointment was made, but the surgeon, as I was being led in, said I shouldn't drive home!

  • Thanks Angie, il get a taxi just incase x

  • Hi Just to update my changed mole on my back was actually a "ruptured hair folicle" right next to the mole making it look.different/red/enlarged.  Thought it was important to update for future users. No further treatment needed. Thank you so much for the support on here. I wish everyone well.

  • That's wonderful news. Thank you for updating us - as you say, it helps others awaiting referrals or results. Take care xx
