Mouth ulcer

Hi, I recently was referred to ENT for a mouth ulcer on the floor of my mouth which I have had for over 2 months. The doctor just looked visually and was more confused then I was with what it might be. He said he wasn't concerned because I haven't had any pain. I'm really worried as when I've been searching it states that mouth cancer is normally caught in the late stages due to it not causing any pain. Should I seek another opinion? He didn't even give me any answers to what it might be or carry out any tests.

I know you're not doctors but how do I go about trying to get another urgent referral for a second opinion? My friend recently had cancer and was misdiagnosed the first time (different area though) so feeling really anxious.

  • I used to work in a dental set up for years, but not a dentist. If you had no luck with the ENT, you should ask to be referred to a maxillofacial surgeon. Long standing lesions (2 weeks plus), that show no improvement, or that get worse, within the oral cavity should be biopsied. Especially if you either smoke or drink alcohol regularly.

You're correct, early oral cancer doesn't tend to cause pain (not always the case, though). Everyone is entitled to a second opinion if they have genuine concerns. Having a non healing ulcer is not normal. However, there are other conditions other than cancer that can cause non healing or slow healing patches/ulcers. Such as autoimmune conditions etc.

Weird question, but how are your bowels? I ask because Crohn's etc can present in this way too.
