Worried/scared/anxious…

Hi.

I'm hoping someone maybe able to help?

My son (17), has been losing weight unintentionally since May 2022. I have taken him to GP on numerous occasions and was always dismissed as an OTT mother and was even convinced by the GP, my son may have an eating disorder!

Anyway, Jan 2023, he had watery diarrhoea for three weeks and vomiting for 2 weeks, which ended with a hospital admission. On admission, he was weighed and his weight was 49.2kg. Bare in mind my son is 5ft11. Since this, test have been done and his CRP is raised and his calprotectin reading is 590.

I'm so worried! I know it could be anything, but literally had to fight to get a referral to a paediatrician, just so he can be seen by the community dietician and now an urgent referral has gone in to the gastro team.

I feel like if I was listened to first time regarding my concerns, then my son wouldn't be like he is now. He is very weak, complaining of headaches, keeps getting wobbly on his feet. He is eating and drinking, and I've also started a food and bowel diary, just so I can show what he is eating and then what is happening regarding his bowels.

I know it could possibly be chrons or ulcerative colitis, but I also know that these symptoms could also be something much worse.

Has anyone got any ideas on what I can do? I just want to support my son and have him back to the healthy, beautiful young man he once was.

  • Hello kmr86

I'm so sorry to hear about the health problems that your son has had over the past year and that you've had difficulties in getting a referral to have these symptoms checked. Hopefully, now that a gastro referral has been made, he won't have to wait too long to see the specialist.

You're right when you say that there could be any number of conditions that could be causing these symptoms including Chrons or UC. The risk of developing bowel cancer increases with age so it would be unusual for a teenager to be diagnosed with bowel cancer but I can see from your post that this is a concern for you.

I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our nurses ahead of your son's appointment with the gastro team. I'm sure they'll be happy to offer any advice and support they can along with helping you think about any questions you might want to ask. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you have some answers and that the specialists are able to start your son on the road to recovery soon.

    Best wishes,
