Quick appointment after MRI scan concerning?

After several months of lower abdominal pain I was referred for an ultrasound scan. This found a possible lump on my liver (unexpected as higher up than the pain). Urgent cancer referral and MRI on liver 2 days ago. Today the hospital have phoned me to book a clinic appointment in a few days. This seems very fast and i'm concerned that it is going to be very bad news that they need to deliver in person.

Is it common to have a clinic appointment to deliver good 'clear scan' news? I would have thought a letter back to GP and a phonecall to myself would be all that was needed for good news so I am scared that a clinic visit is only going to be bad!

  • Hello HaveBlue

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some investigations on a possible lump on your liver/ It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about the upcoming appointment and worried about what the Consultant may say.

There could be any number of reasons that the team has requested a face-to-face appointment. It may be that they don't have a firm diagnosis and want to discuss more tests with you. It may be that they want to monitor your health and review you with further tests in the future. And yes it could be that they have some news that no one wants to receive. But until you attend the appointment we can only guess what they're going to say.

Is there someone who can attend the appointment with you for support? Sometimes it can help to have a friend or family member there as an extra set of ears to help remember all the information you're given during an appointment.

You might also want to give our nurses a call for some advice and support ahead of seeing the specialist. If you'd like to chat things through with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
