Bleeding for 25 days due to ovarian cyst

Hi,

I am 29 years old and I have been experiencing prolonged bleeding for 25 days and it's still going. I have been to the doctor and all they are saying is that it's normal and that I should wait until it stops. However, the bleeding increased so I went and did a scan privately. They found a cyst on my ovary which is likely causing the bleeding. I have told my doctor but they said I still need to wait until this period is finished before they can do anything. It does not look to be slowing down. I was just wondering if it is possible to continue bleeding until the cyst is removed or if it's possible to stop bleeding before then?

  • Hi Raee17,

Sorry to hear you're going through this. Has the GP prescribed you any medication to try and stop the bleeding? I've had something similar, prolonged bleeding (at one point I bled for 8 weeks straight with just 3 random days where I didn't bleed), scan showed ovarian cyst and possible uterine polyp. My GP put me on Tranexamic acid which stopped the bleeding. She also referred me to Gynae precisely because I was bleeding, so I can't see why they can't refer you to Gynae even if you are still bleeding. Maybe try a different GP at your surgery as some are better than others. Good luck getting sorted

  • My GP prescribed tranexamic acid, which I started taking but it made it made my period come heavier within 2 days of taking it, which I think it means its not working. They have also said I can go on the combined pill which I'm considering taking if it stops the bleeding. They said they will refer me to gynaecologist after I have had another ultrasound but I'm still waiting for an appointment to get an ultrasound. I have seen three different doctors that have told me the same thing.

  • It must be so stressful for you, hopefully they can get the bleeding stopped. My bleeding also got heavier the day after I started the tranexamic acid and was really heavy for 3 days, but gradually decreased and stopped 10 days after starting the tranexamic acid. At times it took 2 weeks for the tranexamic acid to stop the bleeding, but my GP didn't seem concerned and was happy for me to carry on taking it.

  • Hi, sorry for the late reply. Thank you and your reply has relived some stress for me. I have continued taking the tranexamic acid so hopefully it will stop soon and I'm sorry to hear a similar thing is happening to you. It can be stressful and tiring. I hope you get everything sorted soon and wverythig goes well with treatment.

  • Thanks Raee17, I hope things go well for you too and you get some answers x
