Suspected Melanoma

Hi everyone,

Cutting a long story short, I've been to have my mole and surrounding skin removed. The dermatologist couldn't say for sure that it was melanoma however, she seemed fairly confident that it most probably would be and mentioned that at a later date, I may need more skin removed.

In your experiences, will I receive a staging (if it is melanoma) when I receive the results from the excision?

Thank you x

  • Hi Jo,

Not necessarily. You usually receive the staging after the second surgery, the Wide Local Excision, but if the first excision took enough tissue away with the mole, the histologist may be able to accurately assess the depth of the melanoma.

Hopefully it will come back as dysplastic or benign. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Angie, Thank you so much for your reply and advice . I was so confused and scared I couldn't remember clearly what they had said about the results (hopefully they're clear)

I'ts all happened very quickly and been so scary ... Im now going to Google dysplastic as I'm unsure what that is

    Thank you again x

  • Dysplastic, also known as Atypical, means the mole is precancerous. It's been caught before the cells, which are changing, have become cancerous. I hope that helps x

  • Hi Angie yes I quickly googled and realised it meant Atypical I will let you know the wait is agonising I was told  results return between 4/6 weeks

I hope you are doing as well as you can Angie,  melanoma since 2009 you are so brave x
