Abnormal cells on smear test - urgent referral

Hello,

I'm writing this to see if anyone else has had a similar thing, and if so, what was the end result?
So about 4 years ago I had my smear results showed HPV, no other changes, I had to go back every year for a smear and each one came back with the same thing. Last year after 3 HPV positive tests I was sent for a colposcopy, I arrived sat in the chair they took and look and said all is okay and to have another smear next year, fast forward to this year.... I had my smear done 2 weeks ago, the nurse struggled to find my cervix but after a few attempts managed to find it, I've just had my results letter back today (my birthday) and it says still positive for HPV and there are changes in my cells, it also reads that an urgent colposcopy has been arranged within the next 2 weeks (no date given) as these cells will need treatment. I'm so scared, I'm 45 and just in the process of buying my first home with my husband. Has anyone else had a similar experience and what was the outcome? Thank you for reading

  • Hi Lavlea

I'm going through the same thing. I've had abnormal cells for past few years with HPV. I've had treatment for HPV 2 yrs ago. The abnormal cells I had were called CIN. These are non cancerous cells. I had a colposcopy done in November last year with a biopsy. Got results the other day to say I still have HPV. The treatment for HPV can take a few goes before it completely clears. My treatment was very easy and simple. It starts off like a smear but then I had a local anesthetic applied and after a few minutes I had the HPV cells removed. Its done either by freezing them away or by heat. I honestly can't remember what one I had as it was 2 yrs ago and my 1st time so I was terrified. Don't think I retained the name of treatment. I'm due back at clinic in Feb for treatment again but they are going to try the opposite one from what I had done 2 yrs ago. There are a few local treatments that can be used.

Please don't worry. I dont think it will be cancer. My gynaecologist told me it takes years and years for cancer cells to develop and u have been having smear tests.
