Raised CA125

Hello ladies I've just been reading through some of your posts which have been very informative as I lost my sister who was 54 a year & a half ago to Ovarian Cancer ...as a precaution myself & my remaining 4 sisters had a CA125 test done and my came back at just 36 that was a year & a half ago so I asked for another CA125 blood test to be done last week and it has come back now at 80 so my doctor has requested an ultrasound for me ..... I'm soo worried now and I know everyone says don't be but it's very had not to be especially after seeing my sister go through it .  I've also been experiencing very heavy and painful periods but I'm putting that down to my age I'm 53 ... really I thought I'd be done with them by now .  Anyway it's a wait and see game now and I know there is long delays in getting appointments in Irish hospital .  The stress is awful

  • Hi,

Of course you are worried, it is human nature to fear the worst, particularly when you have watched a loved one go through it.  I cannot offer much in the way of advice, however I am similar age to yourself and was also having very painful and heavy periods between ages of 51 - 53.  I was pretty worried as about 3 years ago my smear result came back with mild abnormalities, however I tested negative for hpv, so they deemed that I was still low risk for cervical cancer, so i am still only on 5 yearly checks.

But of course I worried, it wasnt until I was 54 that my periods stopped, so I relaxed then, thinking if there was anything wrong, the bleeding would have carried on.

I know from the posts on this forum, that there can be lots of reasons for a high Ca reading, fingers crossed there will be another reason for it.

However, at least you only had it checked 18 months ago, so even if there is any concern, you are hopefully if a good place for having caught things early.

    Best wishes

    Marie
