Wait & Watch for Swollen Lymph Node - Terrified!!!

So I had the flu for about 5 or 6 weeks and during that time, I had a lump appear on my neck which was about the size of a ping pong ball. My flu finally started to clear up last week, but the lump is still there.

I went to the GP this Monday just gone and she took all of my vitals such as temp, blood pressure, checked my breathing etc and all came back fine. I showed her a photo of the lump from the middle of the flu and she said it has definitely gone down in size but is definitely still there.

She told me that she thinks it's due to the flu as they can last weeks or even months after recovery, but she has put me on a Wait & Watch for the next three weeks and if it doesn't go down or it starts to hurt or it gets bigger, I need to go back and be referred for an urgent scan.

I am SO scared!! If it doesn't go down then it's most likely lymphoma or something right? I am absolutely spiralling and getting myself into a panic!!

  • Hello Anxious1993,

You did well to go to the GP to get this lump examined and it sounds like she was really thorough and that they stronly suspect that the lump is due to the flu and it's reassuring that it has gone down in size. It's bound to be very stressful for you to have to wait and watch this swollen lymph node for the next three weeks but it sounds like a reasonable approach: it's important that you follow the GP's advice and that if you notice that it starts to hurt more or gets bigger in size, you go back to the GP.

It's normal to be scared but try not to worry too much: if it doesn't go down, it doesn't necessarily mean it is lymphoma or anything to be concerned about. I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. The 3 week wait will probably feel really long and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
