Hi Kirsty,
A very warm welcome to our forum. Return times can vary from area to area and hospital to hospital. What was your biopsy for, as some take longer than others. For example a breast biopsy is usually back within 1-2 weeks, but a dermatology biopsy can take much longer.
It is always a good idea whenever you have a scan or a biopsy, to ask when it is likely to be back before you leave. However, it is hard to know this at your first visit and the waiting is a little easier when you have a time line to work to.
I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Hi, we're from Edinburgh.
My wife had BC and her results were back within the week. That said, not all biopsies are equal (some are quite complex) and there are a lot of variables involved. Some require further investigation if the result initially comes back as inconclusive, and a host of other reasons. It's not uncommon for biopsies to be sent elsewhere for a second set of eyes to go over them, so to speak. I also think they're done in batches, so some folks biopsies may get done quicker than others depending on when those batches get done.
It depends on what equipment is available in each area, as not every area has every piece of kit, so as you see it's not a one size fits all. But Edinburgh does have that university attached to it along with other amenities and expertise (depending on the cancer type), so we found the process quick.
Hi,
I had a biopsy last November. I was told there and then. Dr told me whilst doing the biopsy that it was breast cancer. I had my op a year ago 17th Jan.
Hope all goes well for you.
Regards
Hi Jolamine,
Thanks for your lovely warm welcome :)
The biopsy is for my husband for Lymphoma which has come up on a CT Scan last Thursday. I managed to speak to a person yesterday who confirmed the biopsy had been ordered, I am not sure what that really means and I phoned again this morning but there is no date on my husbands record on their system. A horrible waiting game now, waiting for a letter in the post, hoping it doesn't go astray and the date is fairly soon. He is suffering with quite a bit of pain due to a fracture in his vertebrae which has been flagged on the CT scan which most possibly is linked to the lymphoma which we thought and had been told was just muscle damage from exercising but had been there for 4 months. So he is suffering alot with back pain particularly at night and so we are pretty despereate to get the diagnosis and get him into treatment asap if anything to aleviate some pain if at all possible. Alot of patience is required I feel right now.

Hello, I am very happy to hear your are doing so well.
My husband's CT Scan has flagged swollen lymph nodes above and below the diaphragm and one pusing on his kidney with some bone anomoly and we were told there and then it was Lymphoma which I believe is not straight forward for testing in biopsy and can take a bit longer for results to come back because of establising if it is non-hodgkinsons, hodgkinsons and cell identification that Lymphoma affecting.
All the best for the future.
Thank you for taking the time to post that info. thats really helpful, yes my husbands is Lymphoma, I think its one that takes longer to get results on. Biopsy is ordered but I'm not sure if that means a date has been given yet. If like you say they are done in batches it could be a week or so, biopsy on lymph nodes is apparently not that straight forward either so I'm not sure if its additional equipment and specific doctor becoming available.
HI Kirsty,
As far as I understand these should be back within 2 weeks. It is helpful to know that the biopsy has already been submitted. The hold up is not just at the pathology lab. The consultant usually holds regular MDT (multidisciplinary team) meetings (mostly on a weekly basis). This is where all of the health professionals, who are likely to be involved in your husband's care, get together to discuss the pathology findings and decide upon the best treatment for him.
As I said in my last reply, it is always worth pinning the staff down, to find out when they expect your results to be back, after any tests and before you leave the hospital building. This is a worrying enough wait, even if you know when the results are due back. It sounds as if you are both finding this hard, so I sincerely hope that you hear soon. Irrespective of the outcome, you will find it easier when you have a diagnosis and can start treating this. The best person to speak to about this is usually the consultant's secretary, as they will know when the results come back.
Please keep in touch and let us know how he gets on. We are always here for both of you.
Kind regards,
Jolamine xx
