Swelling of neck/difficulty swallowing

I guess this is an outlet to express my worry and concern. For the past 5 days I've had a swollen throat, no specific lump, but my throat is generally swollen. It isn't sore at all. More very uncomfortable swallowing food and drink. The restrictive feeling that is really distracting and uncomfortable. I Googled symptoms (as we do!) and more than one result came up as thyroid cancer symptoms. Trying not to latch on to this and seeing a GP in the morning.

I tried antacids in case it was from reflux but ineffective. I have a bad tummy too.

I'm 41 and have been on HRT for 18 months (after going through early perimenopause) so worry about this added risk.

Has anyone experienced similar. I'd so appreciate hearing from anyone.

  • Hi

I had similar to this a few years ago, felt like when I was swallowing, tablets and food was getting stuck in my throat.  I also was worried about thyroid as mine seemed bigger on one side.

I saw my gp who as some of the symptoms could be cancer, refered me under 2 week pathway.  Of course in this time I convinced myself that I had cancer, as we all do!

Saw ENT consultant, had very thin camera fed up through nose & down throat, throat was a bit red she said, but no lumps found.  Was sent for ultra sound of thyroid, was confirmed that I have a lump on it, but they could tell from looking that it's benign one.

Long and short of it was even though I didnt feel like I had acid reflux, I actually did. When lying down, the stomach acid rises up & makes the valve in your throat swollen, which then makes you feel like you can't swallow.  I was put on medication & it gradually went away.  Every now and again, if I get stressed, it can flare up again, so i just take medication that calms it down again.

It is good that you have a gp appointment, dont panic if you get referred for US and ENT consultant, thats just what they do.

    Good luck with your appointment.

    Marie

ps.  forgot to mention, full blood tests were done at ent appointment, so that also ruled out any other problems.

  • Hi Marie

Thanks for your reply and reassurances. I'm glad you were okay. I saw my GP this morning and she referred me up the the hospital to be seen this afternoon by ENT.

I'm pleased to be seen the same day and my GP said its just a precaution to be checked out thoroughly, as there's a number of causes for the swelling.

    I'll update when I know.

    Thanks again
