Referred by Sonographer for MRI

Hi all,

I have been thinking about writing on here for a while, but thought I may just be overthinking.  However I am not sleeping properly and feel I need to ask the question to see if anyone has had a similar situation.

A few months ago I found a lump on the upper right side of my back (around the size of a golf ball).  Initially I thought I had pulled something but quickly got it checked by in case.  It is mostly painless but sometimes I can feel pain radiate over the right side of my back and neck.  I went to my GP who referred me for an ultrasound.  I had the ultrasound last Sunday and I was only in there 5 mins, but the Sonographer told me that she was referring me for an MRI scan.

I know Sonographers can't diagnose and are supposed to tell you that you will get results off your GP, so the fact she referred me there and then has got my mind running away.  I remember years ago having to go for an ultrasound due to another lump and they ruled out anything serious there and then, so this time has taken me by surprise.

has anyone else had a similar situation?  Thank you in advance!

I'm sorry to hear that you're waiting on some further investigations of this lump that you've recently noticed. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious about things.

There could be any number of reasons that the Sonographer has referred you for an MRI. It may be as simple as that they weren't able to get a clear picture by ultrasound to make a diagnosis. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the scan or the results.

We know that for many people waiting for tests and appointments can be a worrying time. If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
