Essential thrombocytosis

Hi,

I have raised platelets and my history is that of a strange one, but still haven't had any blood results. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar history to me.

I was very unwell after having my son who is 12 in a few weeks. I had infection after infection and each time I had antibiotics I felt worse. My symptoms varied, but were mainly aches, lethargy, tingling in peripheries, tinnitus, migraines, depression and head fog. After having blood tests for 2 years and seeing infectious diseases they kind of gave up on me indicating it was all in my head and told me I had to manage it myself, which I have 'blindly'. My platelets back then were just over 450 and my WCC was over 10. I thought I had an overgrowth of fungus and gut disbiosis - due to this I have treated myself with herbs, varying ones but am still on some. Over the last 10 years my platelets have constantly been around 450 and my symptoms mentioned above have been far better. Saying that I have still suffered with tinnitus, vertigo (I've had 2 MRIs), dizziness, low BP at times, Raynaud's and occasional tingling. I am a keen gym goer and have always suffered with joint and muscle pain that I generally ignore. Around 3 months ago I suddenly couldn't move well in the mornings due to pain and it was affecting my sleep as when I changed position during the night the pain woke me up, the pain was all over but mainly in my shoulders and hips. I have also been suffering with dyspepsia, pain around my stomach area and feeling of fullness. Off I went to the GPs still with no diagnosis and again blood tests were done and still my platelets were around 450 and WCC just over 10. Due to having this problem for 12 years I really didn't think it was a problem and the numbers have never gone up, but I always thought there was something wrong with me. I started on steroids for the debilitating pain, I was struggling to get dressed. The steroids worked a treat, I'm now weaning off them, wondering whether I should be on them.

The GP then referred me to haematology. And on the blood form for mutation screen it said "diagnosis essential thrombocytosis", I am now waiting for the results. I am 54 and a nurse, so as soon as I saw the diagnosis I was reading up on it and then thought a lot of my symptoms could be due to raised platelets, but they are not that high and have never gone up. Has anyone ever had symptoms with mildly raised platelets?

My results are due in a few weeks I am so in limbo whether it is a problem or not, but there must be a reason for platelets being raised for so long and I am wondering whether my herb taking and healthy diet has kept everything under control.

Thank you

Kerry

  • Hi Kerry,

    I hope you’re doing okay.

Do you mind me asking what the outcome was to this? I’m having a similar experience currently where my platelets have been raised for a while, they’ve only picked up on it this year but apparently they’ve been a little high since 2020 and I’m waiting on Heamatology guidance at the moment. Very similar symptoms to what you’ve described above.

    Thanks, T xx
