Advice on symptoms please

Hello,

i was wondering whether anyone has been in a similar situation with the below symptoms;

in short - I had a mirena coil fitted around 3 months ago. Prior to this I had had episodes of significant pain and bleeding, followed by normal periods for months on end. Only then to have irregular, heavy bleeding again. My periods became very varied in cycle - often 2 week cycles.
im 36 years old.

i chose the coil, mainly for contraceptive reasons, but also that it could help my irregular episodes of bleeding.

since having the coil I have bled almost continually - minus a few days. Some days are very heavy and include huge clots and tissue masses (one was particularly large tissue mass), other days are very minimal spotting. Ive noticed an increase in discharge too - although this is does not smell or isn't odd coloured. I know bleeding is quite normal after having a coil fitted, but I didn't think I would be bleeding so much.

however, I have been experiencing terrible cramps and back pain for a few months now, which is really intensifying the last few weeks and been quite debilitating on some days. On the odd occasion my partner and I have been able to have sex over the last few months (due to the bleeding) I have been in excruciating pain during and after and it has caused significant bleeding both during and after (which has been mortifying!)

I have also started experiencing issues when I urinate - it's almost as if I'm not emptying my bladder properly even though I think I have - I stand up and more wee seems to come out! (Sorry for the tmi!)

I have been to the doctor - she checked my coil and said everything looks fine and in place but has ordered a smear test for me which I have in a couple of weeks.

until this point I didn't really consider it could be anything other than just a coil related issue, but with my doctor ordering the smear test - I'm now a little concerned.

A couple of questions - Would my doctor have been able to tell or see anything when she fitted and then later checked my coil which has made her request the smear test, or is early cervical cancer not visable by eye?
secondly, has anyone else had similar symptoms after having a coil fitted to the above?

apologies in advance for the graphic details! I suppose I just wanted to list as much as I could in the hope that others have had similar experiences and all was ok!

thank you x

  • Hello BearsMum

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some ongoing health concerns since having the coil fitted. We know that sometimes women find they do bleed after a coil is in-situ but it's understandable that you're feeling worried.

It's good to hear that you've already seen your GP and that they didn't have any immediate concerns when they examined you. It sounds as if they're being thorough in trying to get to the cause of your problems by requesting a cervical screening and hopefully the results will bring you some reassurance.

If the cervical screening results are fine then it's worth discussing with your GP if you need to see a gynaecologist about your symptoms or indeed if it's worth removing the coil to see if this helps your symptoms.

I do hope that things settle and improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • If your smear comes back okay I would ask for a referral to see a gynaecologist. I've had similar symptoms although I'm now taking an oral contraceptive which has helped with the bleeding (I came off contraception for a few years to try and conceive and the symptoms were 10x worse). my GP thinks I have endometriosis so this might be what is causing your symptoms too
