Bleeding for 5 months and losing clots

Hi,

I have been bleeding for 5 months and losing clots of all shapes, sizes and colours. the bleed has also been light, heavy, dark in colour and light, no consistency. Had uncomfortable pain sometimes in pelvic region and difficult to hold bladder. Loss of appetite , generally feeling low and tired all the time

blood test completed, trans vaginal and pelvis scan

internal check and smear

Ruled out polyps, cancer, menopause, endometriosis

all came back ok but surely there is something wrong as every time I go toilet I have clots of all different types

doctor prescribed tranexamic , folic and iron tablets

I started taken and it slowed but didn't stop for weeks, then stopped for a couple days and started again.

I tested to see if I stop the meds will I still bleed with clots and the answer is yes, so taking all these meds but it's not actually fixing the issues and now answers as to what's happening to me

Doctor has referred me now to gyno it's been 3 weeks and still waiting appointment

worrried, concerned, thinking of going private as it's causing me stress and affecting everyday life in general

has anyone had all these symptoms and any diagnosis?

Thank you in advance for your advise

  • Hi Saralou,

I've been having similar issues to yourself, I was only getting a week off from bleeding each month if I was lucky and was bleeding really heavily, with huge clots as well. It had been going on for over 2 years by the time the GP took me seriously. I had an internal ultrasound which found my womb lining was 19mm thick and I'd been bleeding for a week at that point. So I was referred to gynaecology, my GP referred me as urgent (after I said I'd done some research and one of the causes could be cancer), but the gynaecology team reviewed me and decided I was just routine. Had to wait 6 months for an appointment. Since seeing them in November I've had 2 Hysteroscopys and 2 sets of biopsies taken because the first set said I have atypical endometrial hyperplasia but they weren't able to rule out if it had already turned to cancer because of the sample size being too small. I'm waiting for the second results now so they can decide what treatment I need.

The hospital gave me Norethisterone to take so I could at least have a break from all the bleeding, was meant to have a 7 day break from the tablet each month but the pain and heaviness was so bad they've now said just to continually take them until we know what the next step is. It might be worth asking your GP if they'd give you Norethisterone.

How old are you? If you don't mind me asking. Did your internal scan say anything about your lining or did you see a copy of the results for yourself? Because none of the doctors seemed overly concerned initially about my results but since they've done the Hysteroscopy and they've actually seen the inside of my womb on camera now they've all said it's really abnormal.

I hope you don't have to wait too long to see gynaecology and everything's ok.

    Take care x

  • Hi Meg,

thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate you sharing your experience with me. I hope that your results come back ok and that they can help you.

I am 42 and the doctor didn't tell me anything about my scan just said all ok.. I will call my doctor to ask about the lining and thickness.

  • Hi Meg,

since our last chat I paid private and I have had biopsy done which came back all ok

pelvic scan and transvaginal also all ok apart from a small cysts on left ovary but benign and if no concern or connection.

I still have issue of bleeding heavy with no break and losing clots which is still a big concern.

still waiting for NHS gyno appointment to come through which was requested in October last year.

the GP has not given me any more idea what this could be and I'm just advised to carry on but it's affecting everyday life now.

I asked GP if I could have hysterectomy as my husband and I have been together over 20 years and he as had vasectomy and I'm 42 he 50, they said no?

I know all tests have confirmed no cancer so this is a relive but what if it's just not been detected as I have a friend that had the same issues and she is stage 4 cervical cancer

the private clinic suggested a coil fitted but I'm not sure or HRT but GP refused as stated I don't need this..

j just don't know what to do now and no further forward with the issue

    hope you are ok

  • Hi Sarah

I'm glad all your results are coming back as ok, that's reassuring to hear at least. When you went private did they put a camera up to have a look in your womb?

I think if you ask for a hysterectomy when you see the gynaecologist they probably won't say no, especially because it's affecting your everyday life. They can't just let you carry on like you are doing it's not fair.

I'm still waiting to hear from the gynaecologist how bad mine is, my second set of biopsies came back saying the same thing as the first, that the pathologist isn't happy to say it's not cancer for sure because of how abnormal they are. I had to have a MRI scan and waiting for the results now, but I don't seem to hear anything back from the hospital unless I call them to check what's happening, which is becoming really frustrating. Think I'll most likely be having a hysterectomy but don't think they really want to do it because I'm only 34 with no kids, but I'm not putting my life at risk for the chance of a baby that's not happened in the last 18 years since I've been with my husband.

I hope you get an appointment soon and start to get some answers as to what's causing the problem.

    Take care x
