Worried about referral for suspected thyroid cancer

Hello, I'm feeling super stressed out after speaking with my doctor today. I went to GP Monday after finding lump on my neck few days prior. I had sore throat from previous week and general cold symptoms.

She confirmed lump was on my thyroid and ran thyroid tests. Thyroid tests came back clear today. Inflamatory markers slightly high. She was concerned with location of lump and confirmed was referring me as urgent suspected thyroid cancer pathway. My mind is now all over the place.

Im just about to turn 39 with a five year old little girl and I don't know what to think

  • Try not to worry too much (though I know this is far easier said than done).

Thyroid nodules are pretty common and the vast majority are not cancer. I think only about 5% - 10% of them are. The odds are you don't have cancer. An urgent suspected cancer pathway doesn't necessarily mean they think it is cancer. If cancer is a risk at all, they have to do that.

And even if you do have cancer, which you probably don't, thyroid cancer isn't what you might be imagining when you hear the word "cancer". At your age, the survival rate for the most common form of thyroid cancer is probably over 99% and they don't usually use chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

Worst case scenario is likely to be getting an operation to remove your thyroid and possibly lymph nodes if there has been any spread to them.

I had thyroid cancer three years ago (literally, this day three years ago, I was in hospital recovering from the operation). I missed just under a month of work and would have probably gone back earlier except I'm a teacher and really need to be able to turn my head quickly and raise my voice (not to give out to students so much as just to be able to make myself heard when doing yard duty and so on).

  • Thank you so much for your response, it's hard not to assume the worst but nice to hear a positive story. So glad to hear you recovered well from your operation. ️

  • Hi there ! Sorry to hear the worry you are going through , I am also going through something similar , I had problems with my thyroid 10 years ago , had radioiodine therapy to help with my thyroid and seemed to be ok . Over the last few years I've had a lot of gynaecology issues , recently diagnosed with adenomyosis and have had problems with my thyroid , I've had a recent scan which confirmed I have several nodules , 2 of which are hyper vascular , so I'm just waiting to be seen by the ENT 2WW next week .
Dont really know what to think ... my other symptoms include anxiety , weight loss , insomnia , hunger , and neck pain at the back radiating up to the ears !
    Anyone have anything similar ?

  • Hi sorry to hear you are going through all of this, sounds like tough few years. I hope they can get to the bottom of it for you soon and get some answers and forward plans.

I don't really have any of the regular thyroid symptoms so can't help there. My thyroid levels appear to be fine. My main symptom is the lump in my neck, it's uncomfortable more than anything. I had a sore throat the last two weeks but thought it was due to the common cold. My lump and symptoms have only become apparent over the last 5 days.

  • Hi [@starsandmoons12]‍  I have pretty much the same thing as you. How have you got on have you had a uS  or anything yet?
a sore throat and thought it was another viral bugs the kids had brought home from nursery then noticed a lump at the end of Jan. I have had pretty severe weight loss though although thyroid bloods kept coming back as normal. When the lump came up GPnreferred to US and they saw 1 U3 nodule just shy of 2cm  and 3 others over 1cm said U2 but apparently internodule vascularity and echo stoic. So was referred on 2WW and due a biopsy on Thursday. the wait is killing me and knowing I will another wait for the biopsy results is awful.
