Colonoscopy or CT Scan

Hi, I am new to the forum.
had blood in fit test and was referred to hospital. It's been 3 weeks and I have a telephone consultation on Tuesday to ask questions about symptoms to decide if I have a colonoscopy or ct scan I think. What questions do they ask as I will be at work and how do they decide what one I will have ?

thank you

  • Hi, I would say have a colonoscopy. That's good standard. A CT does not always show pre cancerous polyps, which is what happened in my case. Even though I was referred to have a ct after polyp was found through colonoscopy but could not be seen on the CT. X

  • Hiya, thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. Do I make the decision or does the person asking me the symptoms questions? Did you have a telephone appointment first ? If so what are the questions as I will be at work when I have my telephone appointment?

    how are you now ?

    thanks again

  • Hiya no problem, my referral took over year cause of Covid and my age. I was 30 and they actually kept saying it's hemorrhoids and delayed it more. I spoke to the consultant twice on the phone. The first one said let's do a CT scan due to Covid and colonoscopy had long waiting list and I denied it and I also fell pregnant during that time so more of reason to say no to the ct scan. About 9 months after my baby was born I called PALS up and complained that I still have not received a colonoscopy appointment and that's when they gave it straight away. I'm actually confused why they even offered a ct scan instead of a colonoscopy, usually they do a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. Please insist on a colonoscopy when have your phone appointment. Say that you are not comfortable with CT scan findings.

Thinking back if I agreed to the CT scan they would have not seen anything and I would have been discharged and this pre cancerous polyp would have probably become something nasty and it would have been too late. X

  • You said how am I know, sorry I rambled and didn't answer. After they found my polyp they did not know if it was cancer or not so I had a ct scan and mri. I was then referred to another hospital that specializes in removal of the complex polyp I had. I had a ESD procedure. I was put to sleep and they took the polyp out. I got histology reports that it had high and low dysplasia, so pre cancerous. I was so scared. I am on surveillance now. I get checked at 6 months and have my one year colonoscopy coming up in May. So nervous.
