High calprotectin and faecal immunochemical

Hi all,

Been avidly reading this forum trying to find similar cases and not too sure what I'm hoping to gain as I know I won't get proper answers until further investigations... but nice to know I'm not alone and anyone who's had similar cases or any advice would be greatly recieved...

So over past year or so I've noticed gradual increased bowel movements about 4-5 a day currently, mostly normal otherwise but with occasional blood. I stupidly self diagnosed myself with bowel endometriosis as thought it was related to periods however noticed over past month in every bowel movement there's blood, sometimes a lot, sometimes a little and can be dark clot like and sometimes a fresher red...also more mucus recently.

I've had bloods come back normal otherwise than slightly abnormal bone profile but don't think that's anything? My calprotectin is 1235 and faecal immunochemical is 200...

I'd just be surprised If it was IBD as had no other symptoms (no particular lethargy, no nausea, no weight loss etc) so not sure what to expect.... I'm only 26 so anything sinister is unlikely I guess? But obviously at the back of my mind..

I've got a follow up on the 20th Jan where I presume they'll tell me I need a colonoscopy which I just want ASAP and 20th feels a long way away to wait to discuss results I now have all back.

Sorry for the essay but anyone's advice/opinions and similar experiences (even if negative) would be greatly recieved!!!!

Thank you so much, this community is amazing.

  • Hello Dog123 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

Thank you for your kind words about our community - it is indeed amazing I agree!

You are absolutely right when you say that unfortunately you won't be able to get proper answers until you get the results of these investigations but I hope that you will hear from others here who have had similar symptoms and similar calprotectin results. Being so young, there are indeed so many other things it could be so try not to anticipate the worst if you can.

It's good that you will have this follow up on the 20th of January and I hope that you find out more soon then as whether you might need a colonoscopy. It won't be too long now until your appointment but I can imagine the days are passing slowly and will feel endless. Waiting for answers can be all consuming and there are some good strategies on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news. If you can, stay well away from the temptation of asking Dr Google ;) as this will only make you more anxious and bring up the most frightening scenarios which would most likely be totally unrelated to your situation.

Keeping everything crossed for you that you get some clarity soon on what is going on and that you hear from others who have been in a similar boat before.

    Best wishes,
