Ovarian cancer symptoms and scared

Hi so for the last week I have been cramps spotting and bloating. I have been to doctors and they said if things don't improve they will refer me I have an appimtment in three weeks. So I am scared I have Overian cancer. I am having a ca125 blood test. So don't know if I should go back next week so ask for a unltasous ? Before the three weeks.

  • I have today just had an ultrasound - was referred by my GP following bloods that showed a "raised ovarian marker". The sonologist took ten minutes to reassure me that the ultrasound showed nothing at all of concern with my ovaries and will be writing her report to my GP to this effect. She couldn't identify what the pain and the spotting actually is but at least I now know what it is not, so can push for further tests on other organs. It was a huge relief as the pain is in my lower abdomen so I was convinced it would be ovary-related. I have been very scared of ovarian cancer but the sonologist explained that a blood test showing a "raised ovarian marker" can at best cover 200 different things! (most of them not sinister) and at worst, can even be a false result. I feel so much more positive now I've had the ovarian cancer pretty much ruled out. So please don't panic too much just yet. I have had to wait since 6th December (blood test) for this scan and I've been terrified but was coming to terms with the worst-case scenarios just in case! I may still have more tests to undergo once I discuss the sonologist report with my GP next week but to have one thing ruled out is a good start.

If your blood test comes back with this "raised ovarian marker" that doesn't mean that it is definitely sinister, as I have now found out. If it comes back with this result, your GP should refer you for a scan as they tend to panic and err on the side of caution. Which is probably a good thing even though it freaks us out in the meantime.

Good luck, and keep us posted? There are so many things that this bloating and spotting can be, and I am learning that the chances of it being malignant cancer are far outweighed by the chances of it being something far more innocuous.

  • Thank you for replying to me and I am so glad all is well for you. They are not concerned as had a clear ultrasounds in august. The cramps come and go it's just the bloating. But i I may go back before the 3 weeks we have an appimtment booked for rhe 1st feb with mu doc for a review.

  • Did you have bloating as well?

  •  I am not actally clear what bloating or cramps are! I have never had any health problems. Also I believe I have a high pain threshhold as I used to be able to have dental work with no injections. I have the permanent kind of mild tummy ache right low down in my abdomen where my ovaries would be. Off and on I get a little pricky pain in the area which lasts a second or so. And my abdomen feels kind of heavy much of the time...is that what is meant by bloating?

So much can go wrong with our bodies and I never realised how many organs are in just that area even, until all this kicked off! I am going to go back on the Buscopan that the pharmacist recommended to me when I was trying to persuade the GP to bring the blood test forward due to my pain level at the time. It seemed to help at that time, when I had the really severe bouts of pain. So this could even be IBS but it could be a hundred things or even none! It's a waiting game.

Best wishes for your review. I may know what else they need to test me for, by the end of next week.

  • Thats the tummy ache I have like on a period but sometimes I dont notice it., so will see how the next week goes. Have a follow up on the 1st feb anyway,

  • I never had anything like that with my periods. I am now 62 so long past menopause. I did have what they call a "last hurrah" about two years after my last period, some years ago. I was sent to gynae at that time even though I knew it wasn't sinister as it was exactly the same symptoms as my periods: sore breasts before the bleeding. They went all through tests and stuff and told me that it was inconclusive and they couldn't find any problem and I pretty much said, "I told you so!" However, now I am very much post-menopausal so this is different. I never had any "cramps" or period pains in my life so I don't know what those feel like.
