Fibroadenoma that won’t go away or get smaller.

I found a lump in right breast when I was 19 and told my GP who referred to the breast clinic in the hospital where I had an ultrasound done and was told that it was a fibroadenoma and nothing to worry about. I went back to my GP as I was in constant pain and noticed the lump had got bigger. I was referred back to the breast clinic which they confirmed the lump had got bigger but only "slightly", the consultant said he wouldn't recommend removal due to my age. I was told to keep an eye on it and take painkiller for the pain and would be reviewed in 6 months time. I went back to the hospital another two times for reviews which each ultrasound showed enlargement, the last ultrasound I was told there is now two fibroadenoma that are on top of each other, I expressed my concern that the pain I feel was interfering with my day to day life which he told me "the pain was in my head". The 4 times I went to the breast clinic I was never referred for a biopsy. I'm now 24 and the lump is still here and no sign of it reducing in size. I worried that my age was the reason why I'm being dismissed. Should I be worried ? I'd appreciate any suggestions on what to do next.

  • I dont want to dismiss your concerns but if it was found when you were 19 and you are now 24, you would know by now if it was BC.

I have had a fibrodenoma since 2015. It goes up and down in size - at one point it was borderline for a lumpectomy but I refused as it would have created a size difference in my breast.

I am now actually undergoing treatment for breast cancer. My tumour appeared and grew pretty quickly in size. On the ultrasound, it was clear that it was cancer. For young women, ultrasound are the best diagnostic tool for BC as our breast tissue is alot denser. My tumour does not show on any mammogram.

You are totally correct to be vigilant about your breasts and any changes should always be investigated. You could go back and ask for a biopsy if it would put your mind at ease. Xx

  • Thank you for your response. I'm sorry to hear that and I hope you're doing well.

I think I'm just being slightly paranoid after reading about how some BC can go undetected and the added notion of never having it biopsied.

I have asked for it to be biopsied but the consultant said it wouldn't be necessary. I'll definitely keep an eye on it for now x
