Colonoscopy Pain - more awareness needs to be given

I have just had a colonoscopy on 29th Dec and it was excruciatingly painful so much so my body went into shock and I shook uncontrollably throughout. I had been given sedation but I felt nothing from it so can only presume it didn't work or they didn't give me enough. I was crying out in pain and was given gas and air. Unlike a lot of other posts my doctor was very sympathetic and even came through to recovery to make sure my shaking had stopped. He explained the pain was more than likely from previous surgery from a hysterectomy which can cause scar tissue. I do think there needs to be more awareness about the possibility of pain as I was completely blindsided. It was excruciating and no mention of this in any literature I had read prior to the procedure. Just to mention they think a polyp they found could be cancerous and I'm being rushed through the system so not sure if the pain had anything to do with this.

  • Hello M2202

I'm sorry to hear that your recent colonoscopy experience was so distressing. From posts here on the forum we know that unfortunately sometimes people do find this procedure to be painful. I'm glad to hear that the Doctor was supportive and came to check on you afterward explaining why he felt it had been a difficult procedure for you personally.

Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the results of the polyp biopsy they've taken and whatever the results are, the team will be able to give you some reassurance about the next steps or future follow-ups.

If you want to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
