Lump in armpit has grown, been referred to breast clinic

Good morning all,

I was hoping to get some advice/reassurance I guess.  About a month ago I found a small lump in my left armpit completely painless, assumed it was swollen gland and thought nothing of it, I've lost a stone in weight for no real reason and am completely shattered most days, but I've put this down to my extremely busy and stressful life as both of my children have health problems and special needs.  Anyway fast forward to yesterday morning and noticed it has gone from a small pea size to a large marble size and is very hard.  So with the mind of better safe than sorry I made doctors appointment, the doctor found my lump straight away and carried out a breast exam where she found 'a couple of other lumps' I'm now referred onto the cancer pathway 2week wait for the breast clinic.

Any help or advice would be appreciated even on what to expect maybe.

Thank you for reading

  • Hi there,

Sorry to find you on here and feeling so worried, understandably.  This situation can seem very frightening but please try and stay calm.  Whilst there may be some cause for concern, most breast lumps turn out to be benign breast change or cysts.  My GP told me that the stats from our practice are that only 1:80 referrals turn out to be breast cancer.  Obviously you've done the right thing getting this checked out.  Unfortunately it's a bit of a waiting game going in for tests then having to wait for results, but it's just something we have to get through.  Try to stay busy to distract yourself and stay off Dr Google!

You will have a mammogram and/or ultrasound.  They may take a biopsy of the area there and then or you may have to be re-scheduled for this.  If they want to do a biopsy, don't panic.  These are done to rule out cancer, not just to confirm it.

Most people on here have had a brush with cancer, myself included, and if it does turn out to be a breast cancer then there is so much support and help on this forum.  Breast cancer can be very successfully treated nowadays and you would be very well looked after if that happened.  However, please remember that there is every chance that this won't be, so I hope you can hold onto that and stay positive.

Good luck, wishing you all the best.

  • Mary thank you so much for the information, it really is appreciated.  To be honest more concerned over my children's up coming hospital appointments, I'm a single mum with very little support and haven't told anyone else as of yet just wanted to be prepared in my own head of what's to possibly come really.

    Thank you again

  • Bless you.  I understand as my eldest son has special needs and it can be pretty full on in the early days.  He's 24 now and life is a lot easier!  Look after yourself too.

  • Hello,

I read your story and I am very similar, I found lump under my right armpit few months ago, I've been back and forth to docs to be referred just after Xmas. They did mammogram, ultra sound and biopsy of the lymph node lump, although I am awaiting my results this week they did give me a little assurance that they thought it looked benign. I'm taking that little bit of hope and staying positive until I hear otherwise. It is a worrying time and u do feel like every lump is suspicious but try stay positive lovely

  • Good morning Trastur28,

Thank you for your message and experience so far.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and they best outcome with your results this week.  I think the not knowing it's the hardest bit isn't it, staying positive and crossing each bridge as and when we get to them is all we can do.  My breast clinic appointment is today so I'll post later with any updates I guess.

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thank you so much for your message it is appreciated.  Was a little daunting sitting in the clinic by myself.  I've had scans and also tissue aspiration all I was told was it's not a cyst he doesn't like the size and shape of it so he took the tissue aspiration twice for good measure and I have a phone appointment for any time next Tuesday for results.  Personally hoping for a benign fibrous lump so we shall see.

  • HI Mumoftwo,

Being on your own in the clinic can be daunting, especially when you are getting your results. I am glad to hear that you have had a biopsy today, as this is the best way of finding out whether or not there is anything untoward present. You are fortunate that you have a date to hear the outcome already. Here's hoping that you can report a favourable result on Tuesday.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
