Terrified I have throat cancer!

I discovered a purple raised lump about 1cm big at the back of my throat on my anterior tonsil pillar. I was ill for a week which is what me take a look and then I discovered this lump!

I have had skin cancer before in 2017 and I've been complaining of a constant sore throat and left ear pain for over 6 months now but my GP dismissed it. I finally sent in a photo to my GP which made them do an urgent referral and I have an appointment on the 9th Jan with the Maxilofacial Surgery Team which I am struggling to forget about until the day arrives! I also have a routine dental check up on the 4th Jan so am hoping the Dentist can offer me some reassurance.

I am due back to work tomorrow but am really struggling with health anxiety. Hurry up next week!

  • I'm sorry to hear about the lump you've discovered at the back of your throat Clarebear.

I know this must be scary but I hope your dentist was able to offer some insight and reassurance until you see the maxilofacial surgery team next week.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar predicament will offer their support and advice to you soon but if you feel it may help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help.

Waiting for tests is always tough but we're here for you Clarebear and will have our fingers crossed all goes well on the 9th.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

I've just seen the dentist who thinks it is a blood blister at the back of my throat but is alarmed by the history of sore throat for months and my skin cancer history. He would like to reassure me more but feels it does warrant a full investigation.

    Hurry up Monday!

    Thanks for your support.

  • Update: So I was seen by the maxilofacial team and he said he is happy to remove the lump under general but as its causing me pain he wants the ENT specialists to take a look so I now am waiting to be seen on the 20th Jan. No one knows what it is, the maxilofacial team took a guess of hermangioma but said that it doesn't cause pain like my symptoms.

My health anxiety is beyond anything I have felt before due to my skin cancer history and the waiting is really tough. Fingers crossed Friday comes around quickly!
