Thyroid not knowing

I have a 2and half inch lump in my thyroid. I had a aspiration test and has come back with no result .  I am waiting to have half my thyroid removed this month as it is putting pressure on wind pipe and voice box . They have said they don't know what it is as nodules are normally small . I am very worried at the moment as it's becoming more visible . It is the not knowing that is sending me mad has anybody else exsperanced this .

  • I had a 10.5cm nodule on my thyroid. I don't think one your size is all that unusual. Small ones are more common, but there are a number of bigger ones too.

The majority are still benign and even if it is cancerous, they will probably just remove the other half of your thyroid and maybe do radio-iodine treatment. The latter is really just taking a capsule. It's annoying because you have to isolate afterwards and may have to follow a special diet for two weeks before, but it doesn't hurt or make you sick or really cause side effects

  • Hi,

I am going through exactly the same. I have surgery booked for the 17th Feb for full removal as the THY3F lesion is 5cm long and pushing on my windpipe. Because of the FNA result being THY3F and the size of the lump, the surgeon and I agreed to remove it all, including the whole thyroid.

I agree, it's the not knowing that doesn't help. I find [@MargaretMary]‍ posts very informative and reassuring.

    How did your operation go?

  • Hi they removed and I'm healing really well thank you . I'm on a 2ww but there is a delay so got appointment next week for my results seems like forever . I recovered really well I was in hospital for a couple of nights to be honest it wasn't as bad as I emagined and a bonus as my scar does not look to bad x

  • That's something to be positive about thank you for the reassurance x
