Breast lump, slight dent and occasional discolouration m

Hi everyone

I have an appointment with the breast clinic on Tuesday about a lump in my breast, but have made myself sick with worry and just needed to vent.

The lump is about 3/4cms, it's at the top part of my right breast. It isn't smooth and doesn't move much, which makes me think it isn't a cyst. The area is dented, if you squeeze the breast you can see there is a flat dent there. There is sometimes discolouration on the area - like really faint bruising - sometimes not. No pain. I'm 39.

Has anyone had something similar, and what was your outcome?

I'm terrified. Any kind words much appreciated x

  • I don't think wanting to know the outcomes is in your best mental interest at this moment. Especially if you're already freaking out. Every symptom you can post will have someone, somewhere on here having that exact symptom and being told they have the worst case scenario. By the same token, there will always be folk who share those symptoms, and it turned out to be nothing.

Mentally, you're enduring one of the worst parts of this journey. The not knowing. There are no magic bullets that will ease you through this wait. Other than not reading Google, or seeking out negative outcomes and keeping busy, which does help to an extent, there is not much you can do. Google will never tell you what you do or don't have. It's not a diagnostic tool in the slightest. It throws up the worst case scenario each time because that's what generates the most traffic. And google is driven by ads. It also lumps every symptom together. Sore back, and breast lump. You now have stage 4 cancer. Google won't tell you that sore back is just that, a sore back and completely separate from the breast issue.

If anything, the stats are currently stacked in your favour. Almost 8 out of 10 referrals turn out to be nothing.

My wife's cancer presented as a more on the soft side of hard lump, and she had some pain. By all accounts, those symptoms should have meant it probably wasn't anything sinister. But it was. So use that as an example of not everything you read relates to everyone. Good or bad. Cysts, lipomas etc etc don't always present exactly like the internet tells you. I had a hard non-movable lump on my arm years ago. According to everything i read, it wasn't a lipoma. But it was a lipoma.

    Hi Clars,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am so sorry to hear about your concerns. Waiting to be seen at the breast clinic and then waiting for a result, is one of the most worrying part of our cancer journeys. You have done the right thing by getting this investigated, as the sooner any cancer is found, the better the outcome tends to be. ProfBraw has given you some good advice. All cancers are individual to the person who has them, so it is impossible to give you the comfort that you are looking for.

I have had 3 cancer scares, as a result of finding a lump. In all cases, the surgeon thought that they were cancerous. In 2 cases he was right. Fortunately, he was wrong in the third case. This was proven after having a mammogram, an ultrasound and a biopsy. It is the biopsy which is the definitive decider.

You are likely to have all three tests and then you may have to wait a further 1-2 weeks for the result of your biopsy. If you have a biopsy, make sure to ask when you can expect to get the results, before you leave your appointment. The waiting is another worrying time, but it is easier to cope with, if you know when to expect it.

I am glad to see that you don't have much longer to wait for your appointment and I sincerely hope that nothing untoward is found.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you both for your reply, it is much appreciated

Unfortunately news not good. Nurse told me with mammogram and ultrasound results alone it is extremely likely I have breast cancer. Biopsies done now just waiting for grade etc results.

I am absolutely terrified and feel so worried.

    Hi Clars,

Thank you for getting back to us. I am so sorry to hear that it is likely that you may have cancer. Although I know this comes as a shock, it also gives you a little time to take this in, before you know for sure. I was told the same from my first appointment and was absolutely terrified, as I had already lost my mum to breast cancer. Fotunately, there was absolutely no comparison between the diagnosis, treatment and aftercare that we both had. Treatments have advanced so much in the interim. I am still here 13 years on and living a busy and fulfilling life.

I sincerely hope that you will do likewise.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Clars. So sorry to hear that.

Whilst you now kinda know what you're facing, you're still facing the unknown. so won't sit here patronising you, telling you not to worry. Your emotions are completely normal. my wife found out similarly, and when the day came for the formal diagnosis, it was weirdly ok.
