Large dent on left breast

3 weeks ago I felt a couple of slightly tender lymph nodes in my left armpit/outer breast area. I had been feeling slight discomfort for a fair few days at the point that I had felt them, but as I had had my flu vaccine (left arm) a week earlier, I figured that it was likely from that.

I have difficulty using the phone so I booked the only available GP appointment online, which was for 4 weeks time, thinking that I could cancel it if they went away in that time.

Sure enough the lymph nodes went down, but then due to all my breast self examinations that I was doing in the mean time, noticed a minor dent on the lower outer area of my breast if I lifted my arm. I've since discovered that it is extremely noticeable when lying down and there is an empty area and I can feel what I assume is the ligament holding everything down. I'm not sure if I can feel any lumps or not, I have pretty lumpy breasts anyway and I've been breastfeeding for the last 9 years so it's all a bit weird in there.

Anyway, to cut a very long story short, my GP appointment is on Wednesday and I assume I'll be getting referred to the breast clinic. In the meantime, Google is not my friend and Wednesday can't come soon enough :(

Thank you if you read this far xx

  • Hi hun...last year my gp noticed a dent in my breast tissue whilst I was laid on the examination bed and she was listening to my heart I also had red patch of skin were the dent is...I went to breast clinic th following week were I had 2 typs of mammogram and a ultra scan ...because a small cyst was below the dent and fibristic tissue...I was called back in 4week to see if I had any other symptoms,  I did not so no further action was needed , good luck hope everything goes well for you too x

  • I hope your appointment goes well [@Oopnorth]‍. Google has been getting me into all sorts of doom spirals... try to avoid it.

[@Gibbie]‍ thank you for sharing your symptoms, I have similar (very slight red patch that comes and goes, dent and a hard lump) and have been convincing myself it can't be a cyst or fibrous tissue (because of dr Google) so this is really good to hear. I have my breast clinic appointment on Tuesday.

  • Your welcome,  hope everything goes well for you too xx

  • How did it go lovely?

  • Unfortunately told after ultrasound and mammogram it is cancer. Even before they did the biopsies. They are done now so awaiting results next week.

I am terrified. I am only 39. Nurse said the lump is about 2.5cm and perhaps some sign of something in couple of lymph nodes but not sure. I worry people who are younger get more aggressive cancers?? I am sick with worry.

  • I am so sorry to hear that lovely. I know you are scared, and waiting makes it even more terrifying.

I am so sorry you need to go through all of this.

I have my scan on Friday and I am 100% sure there is something wrong there. Feels like I am not present or this is a dream.

I will keep cross fingers for your biopsy results, I will think about you. xxx

  • I am so so sorry about your appointment :( that is not what you want to hear, I hope someone was with you.  Please let us know how you get on with the result of the biopsy.

I'm still waiting for my initial GP appointment, I psyched myself up and went in for the the appointment this morning, only to be told that the doctor was off sick after much crying and a couple of phone calls they've managed to get me an appointment with another doctor later this afternoon.  I just hope they refer me quickly so I can get all this over and done with

  • I'm still not sorted yet but thought I'd do an update.

I had my GP appointment and she wasn't too concerned but did a regular non urgent referral. I was seen 15 days later (so pretty quickly really!) and by the time of my appointment, then dent was less noticeable, but I had done a video showing the indent so I showed the consultant and he ordered a mammogram. Unfortunately it wasn't a one stop clinic but I was able to go back for it 2 days later. The radiographer needed to read the results was off sick for another week so there was no results that day either.

They had made me a follow up appointment on the day of the mammogram for 4 weeks later (16th Feb). Today I received a letter to bring the appointment forward by 8 days with no explanation. Obviously it could just be shifting around of clinics etc. but the panic has hit in that they've found something and might want to do a biopsy or something. Roll on next Wednesday when I find out if I've got the all clear or if they want to further investigate.

I first found the dent two months ago so time is really dragging now and I just want to know :(

  • Another partial update.

I went back for my follow up appointment a week ago where I was told that there was some asymmetry in the breast that had the dent. They classed it as M3 and the report requested to do extra tomosynthesis views and an ultrasound doing. Unfortunately the mammogram machine was broken, it has now been fixed but I'm waiting for an appointment for both scans. It feels like it's dragging on forever :(
