I’m so worried! Doctors have referred me to a dermatologist

Hi everyone,

looking for some advice please. I suffer with moles anyway and I went to the Gp today and they have urgently referred me to the dermatologist at the hospital and I should receive an appointment within 2 weeks. I have a few moles on my back some raised some not.

im only 23 and I'm scared I'm going to be diagnosed with cancer. How can I stop the worry over the festive period? I haven't stopped crying since I went to the doctors. I suffer with serve anxiety

  • Hi hun, I know exactly how you are feeling. I'm 22 and have been referred in the past (twice) about moles I've had all my life (one being a new one which I discovered this year in April) my anxiety was that high I didn't leave my house all summer unless I really needed to, to keep myself out the sun! My appointments came through fast and I was in and out within minutes of them both, I've heard people have moles that look odd but turn out to be completely fine, the one I was most concerned about is on my forehead had it all my life and it started to lose its colour, so it looked patchy but it was completely fine! Another on she looked at that I didn't like is very dark and raised which she wasn't sure about so got someone else to look at and it's called something but can't exactly remember but it was benign! My anxiety really took a toll on me it was awful please be kind to yourself

  • Good morning I'm awaiting biopsy results my mind set is why worry about something that you can't change and have no control over it seems to work but ever morning still the bad thoughts come to the surface I try to just keep busy and block them out keep away from Google as this only increase anxiety and please stress at you appointment if any suspicions do a biopsy don't accept to have it looked at later or monitored

  • Hi Amy,

Having moles is natural, especially when young. People who have lots of moles, over 100, sometimes get sent to dermatology to check they are OK because they have more chance of having a dysplastic (precancerous) mole. You haven't said why your GP has referred you - what worried the GP about them?

75% of patients referred to dermatology receive a clean bill of health. Together with the fact you are so young, the odds are in your favour that your moles will be fine. If they're not, it would be very unusual to have more than one cancerous mole at the same time. Melanoma is very easily treated if caught early so please don't let your imagination jump ahead of itself. Put it to the back of your mind until you see dermatology - worrying won't help you, it will only ruin your Christmas. Hopefully you won't have long to wait and don't Google!

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
