Link between breast cancer and digestive problems

Hi,

I think I'm just after a crumb of reassurance.

Following a routine mammogram I was called back and yesterday I had a biopsy from a 5mm mass in my left breast. Doctor said it def wasn't a cyst and did look suspicious but as it's small and in a good place could be treatable and my armpit looked clear under ultrasound.

I've been more worried about my digestive problems. Since sept I've had bloating, excess gas, indigestion and lower left stomach ache. My doctor thinks it's diverticulitis and I have an endoscopy booked for Jan but after the breast biopsy I'm really really worried it's bowel or stomach cancer. Has anyone else gone through this?

thanks to anyone who reads this

  • Hello Cath72

I'm sorry to hear that you were called back for further investigations following your recent routine mammogram. It's understandable that you may be feeling worried about things but it sounds positive that the Consultant felt this lump was treatable and that there were no concerns about your armpit following the ultrasound. Hopefully you will hear some news about this biopsy before too long.

It's natural to feel anxious about other health issues when you have, or are facing, a cancer diagnosis. It's not common to have two separate cancer diagnoses at the same time. Breast cancer doesn't typically spread to the bowel or stomach and neither bowel or stomach cancer typically spread to the breast so hopefully this will give you a little reassurance.

For now, try to remain positive but I think that it would be sensible to get in touch with your GP after Christmas to discuss your concerns. Hopefully they will be able to give you some reassurance ahead of your endoscopy at the end of January.

If you want to chat things through with someone then the Macmillan support line is open 8 am to 8 pm all over the festive period our nurse team will be back in the office on Wednesday 28th December on 0808 800 4040 (9 am to 5 pm).

Keep in touch Cath and let us know how you get on over the next few weeks.

    Best wishes,
