Oral biopsy results

I had a biopsy on 1st December on my tongue to remove a small white patch the dentist had found.

The doctor told me that I would either receive a letter with the results, or a phone call.

Just received a letter with a telephone appointment for the 28th December, and no further information. The telephone appt is with the oral doctor, not an oncologist.

I was expecting the results in the letter and am now really scared as I have absolutely no idea what's going on. I'm a worrier at the best of times and now just assuming the worst.

Why would they need to speak to me again if the results are benign. Why wouldn't they just tell me the results in the letter, or at the very least say "The results look like x, so we need to speak to you about further treatment etc."

Now I'm in the dark and can't stop thinking the worst.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

  • Hi there,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this being concerning, and I know the uncertainty and waiting for results can be difficult.

It is normal to give results either over the phone or in person, and this is often not done in a letter because a lot of the time it may lead to more questions and confusion for the person.

It is of course not possible for anyone here to advise on what the results may be, although I appreciate this is difficult. While you wait, try to keep busy and focus on other things to help keep your mind off it.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
