Positive FIT Result

My mum did a bowel cancer screening test a couple of weeks ago, came through the post as she has just turned 58. It came back positive and she has got an appointment tomorrow with a consultant. She has shown no other symptoms at all, will she be recommended to have a colonoscopy or will they just ask her to keep an eye on things. Quite worried as she is my mum and means the world to me. Anyone had one of these consultations and can let me know what happens please.

  • It's very likely she will have a colonoscopy, but there are loads of things that could cause blood in her stool, from hemorrhoids or a fissure to divertculitis (which I have probably misspelled) through IBD and infections or a polyp. I think something like 10% of people get a positive result. They will probably want to find out what is causing it. Hopefully, it will be something pretty minor.
