Exposure to Asbestos at work, can anyone help reassure me?

Hi all!

I work in a victorian theatre, and like many buildings of that age, it has multiple locations with materielas containing asbestos. Most commonly are some of the artex paint around the building, and the surrounds of fire doors - which leads me to my story.

While working on stage, I noticed a contractor just off in the wings hammering and using tools to demolish a doorway. After checking the asbestos survey, the insulation boards were noted as containing Amosite, and Chrysotile in "low" amounts. This contractor disregarded the Asbestos survey and went about his work for at least half an hour, breaking up these boards into smaller pieces and putting them into a pile while myself and 10 other people worked nearby. Once we all realised what was going on the stage was evacuated and the local asbestos contractor was called into to do a clearup and conduct air quality tests. The air quality is now deemed at safe levels, but I have been thinking about the incident for days and the impact it may have for me later on in life.

I realise most asbestos exposures are slightly less severe than this, but would a one time exposure like this pose a serious risk??

Thank you,

BestoBoy

  • Hello Bestoboy

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling so anxious after recent asbestos exposure. We often have people post here on the forum with similar concerns.

I'd suggest having a look at this post that our nurse team recently sent to someone else who had concerns about asbestos exposure. Hopefully, it will offer you some reassurance.

If you're still worried, get in touch with your GP to chat things through.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello, I can only speak from my Father's experience and he passed away at 72 from mesothelioma, asbestosis. However he was born in 1939 and trained as en electrician in the 1950's so had repeated high asbestos exposure, he wasn't really ill a day in his life until his diagnosis 9 years ago. What I am trying to say to you is that he had repeated high asbestos exposure regularly for years and he still went on to live a full and happy healthy life and become a pensioner. Try not to worry. I hope this helps in some way to reassure you.x
