Referred for MRI for 4cm ovary cyst - need reassurance :)

I have a 4cm cyst on my right ovary which is causing me lower back pain and bloating and making me go to the loo a lot. My CA125 was 47. Following an ultrasound the consultant said it was a dermoid cyst and she wouldn't need to see me for another 6 months.

My GP repeated my bloods 6 weeks later. Next thing I know the consultant phones me to say my CA125 was slightly more elevated at 53. She asked if I would like surgery or an MRI first.

I was a bit shocked as I wasn't expecting the turn of events. I opted for an MRI but that was 4 weeks ago and I still haven't had a date for it yet.

I called radiology. They said I was categorised as urgent but it's taking up to 8 weeks to get dates out. (Non- urgent is 10 month wait!).

My mind is going haywire as I can't help thinking she must suspect cancer for her to have changed her mind. Every week that passes I keep thinking it's growing inside of me.

And then I torture myself that this type of cancer can spread quickly. (I need to calm my mind, trying my best).

does anyone have any suggestions as to why else she would have had the sudden turnaround?

thank you.

  • Hello Lynsey

I'm sorry to hear that you find you're waiting on an MRI at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things. We know that for many people this period of waiting and uncertainty can be really difficult and it's natural to be worried and have lots of questions.

Often it can help to talk things through and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support they can ahead of your MRI. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Hopefully you'll have a date for your MRI soon and won't have to wait too long for those results.

Let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lynsey, I'm also Lynsey and had a 10 cm dermoid cyst removed last year. They're so cautious with chances of ovarian cancer because it's so hard to catch early. It's good they've seen the cyst and are moving ahead with tests albeit the MRI is slow to happen. I had a CT scan and an MRI in the end as my dermoid looked suspicious but wasn't cancer.

Wishing you well and hope it's just a dermoid too.

  • That is really good to hear [@Lyns21]‍ Thank you so much for taking the time to let me know that. I'm feeling really emotional as I just lost my mum a few weeks ago and her situation just seems eerily similar. She had a lesion on her pancreas and they were investigating it but the process took ages. Lots of waiting for MRIs and Cat scans etc.  She died before it was resolved :( She was only 62. Think it's giving me a bit of health anxiety.

I have two young kids and really just want to catch things early if it's bad news but I've been having symptoms for a while. First went to GP in February.

anyway, I'm waffling now. :)  thanks again.

  • Thanks so much [@Moderator Jenn]‍  I'll give them a call. I appreciate your help and advice. X

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. My partner's got stage 4 melanoma so I know the health anxiety problems but it's reasonable to be anxious just got to find a way to distract yourself until you know more x

  • [@Lyns21]‍ really sorry to hear this. You must be going through a lot right now.

Yes, distraction is key right now. I'm really trying hard to just focus on the present and not imagine all the worst scenarios. Some days are easier than others.

    xx

  • Hi l had complex ovarian cysts 6 cm and 4cm they didn't grow any bigger during the scans and waiting for results about 3months. I had them removed six weeks later. Along with extensive adhesions they had trouble finding the left overy. Bigger op than expected but after a 5 week wait the results of multiple biopsies were benign

. I hope you have a similar outcome. Waiting is really hard the nhs is struggling at the moment. My cardiac appointment has now gone from 23 weeks to 36!

I expect it will be a year next.

Try to keep busy, l know it's hard avoid google as they only give bad cases. There's lots like me who are now fine .
    take care
