Cytology/smear results help please

Hi everyone,

So I've just had my results back from my smear test which says " high grade dyskaryosis present with features which would raise the possibility of invasive carcinoma " and also " high risk HPV detected"

I'm just wondering if anyone has had that wording in there results and could tell me what it means or what I can expect please? It says I've been directly referred to the colposcopy clinic also but haven't spoken to my doctor yet as its the weekend and I just saw my results this morning through my online account.

Seeing the word invasive has really thrown me :/

Thank you in advance, any help or advise greatly appreciated!!

  • Hi Marie

Hopefully I can try and help. You have high risk hpv-a very common virus-and it has caused cell abnormalities on your cervix (that's the dyskariosis). These cell changes can be mild, moderate or severe and it sounds like your are at the severe end of the scale.

The next step will always be an appointment at the colposcopy clinic where you will have a closer examination of your cervix and have a liquid applied which will highlight the abnormal cells. They may take small biopsies at this point which will be sent for analysis to determine what is there and what treatment is required. There is the possibility that the cells are cancerous, but they can't be sure yet, so that's why it says there is the possibility of invasion.

Abnormal cells are a precancerous condition and can be treated and removed, so hopefully that is all that you will need but they need to check and make sure first.

I hope you don't have long to wait for your appointment and that this can be easily dealt with. x

  • Hi,
