Afraid I may have ovarian cancer

Hi,

I went to my GP as I have been having persistent bloating, tiredness, lightheadness and headaches for around 3 weeks and have been having irregular light periods since August. They did a whole bunch of blood tests and everything came back fine except that my CA 125 was 75 (normal is 35). I've been referred for an ultrasound but I'm so scared it could be ovarian cancer.

I thought it could be a hormone issue as I've been noticing tiredness and migranes related to my cycle. I hasn't even considered ovarian cancer until my GP tested me for CA 125 and now I'm freaking out.

I read CA 125 can be elevated during period. I was on day 2 of my period when I had the blood test. I wondered if anyone had any knowledge about the CA 125? Also, can anyone share their experiences?

Thanks

  • Hi synoptic,

You've done the right thing in speaking to your GP about this. I'm sure the referral is causing some concern, but at least it will mean you get some answers about your symptoms - and I hope it's not too long to wait for this.

In the meantime, you are welcome to give our nurses a call if you'd like to talk things through - they may be able to advise on your question. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi synoptic,

I've had very similar symptoms to you and I'm waiting to go for my blood test (CA125) on 10th January. A few things to add to that list of symptoms for me is horrendous nausea and just being completely unable to eat for a weeks at a time.

I'm curious to know how you got on at your ultrasound. Hope you're doing ok, all things considered. It is so worrying when you don't know what's going on x

  • Hey synoptic,

Just wanted to message and say I'm in a similar boat, my GP felt a lump during a pelvic exam and my ca125 was also at 75 - she told me anything from benign issues to cancer can cause an elevation in ca125 so not to jump to conclusions - I'm only 30 and my GP did also say that women who are still ovulating/menstruating can have a slightly higher ca125. My ultrasound is tomorrow, feels like the longest wait of my life getting to this point (reality is its only been 10 days).

Wishing you all the best and hope you get your ultrasound done fast xx

  • Wishing you all the best [@Catherine-30]‍ they have got you in really quickly for the ultrasound which is really good, keep up posted. xxx

  • Hey,

Thank you - im in Scotland (no idea if England and Wales are different) and I had the GP on the 20th December who did my pelvic exam, referral to gynae that day who asked my GP to have my ca125 bloods done on Wednesday 21st December (less than 24 hours since I was in) and my ultrasound was originally booked for 3rd Jan but they had a cancellation for the 30th so I took it

It's terrifying going through all this but the care I've received so far has been amazing and it's nice to see it being taken seriously and not being brushed off as IBS which I originally thought it was xx

  • that is really good to hear, honestly wishing you all the best x x

  • Hey,

Just thought I'd jump on and say I had my ultrasound today - I've been told I've got a large teratoma tumour (dermoid cyst) and it's most likely benign - needs to be removed and a biopsy done and also getting referred for an MRI and a CT Scan which was all recommended by radiology. They seemed happy with the ultrasound and reassured me. I'm hoping this gives someone a bit of hope because god knows I needed that when I was looking for some xx

  • Oh that is fantastic news and really does give me hope, thank you so much for letting us know, they told you the results today? That's so quick, I hope you can relax now and have a happy new year. X x

  • Hey,

I was surprised at being told anything but the radiologist was very relaxed and told me everything after the scan was done and said its most likely a  benign teratoma tumour, he said a very small percentage are cancerous but it's unlikely in my case, also told me it's very common in my age group - it was very reassuring to finally speak to someone. He also checked all other pelvic organs and abdominal organs and told me the mass was confined to my right ovary which he said was very good and everything is healthy.

Hope you are doing okay and keeping well xx
