"Non-urgent" appointment to discuss blood and stool

I’ve recently turned 40 and I’ve had digestion problems, including trapped wind and bloating for the past six weeks. I’ve also had blood on two occasions after I wiped my bottom a bit too hard (which has happened in the past), though thankfully that is now gone.

I went to my GP, who diagnosed an infection and anal tear over the phone, but ordered a battery of blood and stool tests. I overheard the nurse who took the blood sample say to a departing patient, “if the results are abnormal you will hear from us, but if they’re not you won’t” (the stool sample was separately processed by the surgery).

After waiting nearly three weeks for the results, without hearing anything, I finally summoned up the courage to phone the surgery, who gave me a “non-urgent” (their words) appointment over the phone for 1 weeks time to discuss the results.

Obviously, I won’t know for sure until I speak to them in 5 days, but am I correct in thinking that if the FIT test had come back positive, or if they had found something that indicated cancer, the normal procedure would have been for them to contact me directly, or at least give see me urgently?

I appreciate that these are not normal times, so I’m not complaining - I just want to get in the correct frame of mind, so I can either reassure myself, or prepare for the worst (and I appreciate that I may have to endure further tests in any case).

  • Hi, I'm not a professional so it's only what I've experienced in the past! From what you have said and the receptionist saying non urgent I'd be confident in thinking it's just a call to tell you the results and any next steps for getting your symptoms resolved! I've always had the understanding that if I'm not contacted within 2-3 weeks after tests it's nothing super serious.
I've had tests and scans done and never heard a thing from it but when I've asked why it's because they were all normal.
I hope you feel reassured and all goes well for you!

  • I had a very similar story to you when I was 40 - trapped wind, rectal bleeding (in my case, almost daily for weeks), some weight loss and some loose stools. The specialist said that at my age at the time, cancer was the least likely outcome and I would be "the unluckiest person in the world" if that turned out to be the answer.

In my case, it turned out to be hemorrhoids, which was what we all expected. Hopefully, you're results will be equally good.

  • Just a quick update that I had the telephone appointment yesterday and it turns out that there weren't any problems: FIT negative, Blood Test (including LFT, Iron and Thyroid etc) all fine, with the only problem that folic acid was a little low. Advised to contact GP again if symptoms are still there in 6 weeks time, but for now I'm very relieved! Thanks to everybody who reassured me!
