High Ca125 levels with 7cm ovarian cyst

Hi all,

my reason for posting is to hopefully give someone some reassurance like I so desperately needed.

back story is a couple years ago I had a large 10cm complex ovarian cyst found on my left ovary after having some pain, I got the standard blood test for ca125 which came up just over the normal amount (40) so was urgently referred for an MRI and after a long 2 week wait I found out it was likely benign but I still needed surgery. Unfortunately when they operated they couldn't save my ovary so I was left with just my right ovary.

skip forward a year I fell pregnant with a healthy baby boy. He's now just turned 2 and I started getting very similar pain on my right side and was so upset as I suspected another ovarian cyst, I also was planning on having another baby next year :(. After waiting 4 weeks for an ultrasound they confirmed I had a 7cm complex cyst on my right ovary. I wasn't too worried at this point but feeling very sad as it was like de ja vu, I knew the drill and went for the blood tests.. except they came back this time with levels of 438!! I found myself googling like mad and scouring these forums for a positive story similar to mine (and I struggled) so my anxiety between my CT scan and MRI and my results was absolutely crippling, I convinced myself I was dying and it made me really physically unwell (which then convinces you even more that something is seriously wrong) well I just got my CT scan results today and after a week and a half of not eating or sleeping... they are happy it is low risk and highly unlikely to be cancer. I still have to wait for my MRI results to determine the type of cyst and have no idea what my fertility's future will be. But for now I feel like I can breathe again and be a proper mum to my little boy. When you have children it's so much scarier.

I really hope my story can comfort someone going through something similar, don't get too caught up in the high ca125 levels like I did - my doctors reassured me it's usually a red herring and one doctor even said he once had a lady with levels of 25,000 and there was nothing wrong with her!

Big hugs to anyone waiting on results xxx

  • Hi Jenkins and welcome to the Cancer Chat forum.

I just came across your post and wanted to thank you for sharing your experience with us and to let you know how pleased I am by your outcome.

It must be such a relief to know both cysts were not sinister and that you can start moving forward with your life again. Hopefully this won't impact too much on your fertility, but do be sure to discuss this with your GP and/or specialist team as they'll be in the best position to answer your questions and put your mind at ease.

As you know, we have many posts about raised ca125 levels and ovarian cysts so I have no doubt that your post will really help others who are in a similar position at this time, so thank you again and best wishes for the future.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
