Thyroid cells found in lymph nodes

Hi,

I have done a few posts on here now but wondering if anyone was in the same position as me. I have U4 thyroid nodule and several "associated" enlarged lymph nodes. I had a needle biopsy done which was undetermined but I had an appointment with surgeon last week and she told me that they found thyroid cells in the lymph nodes so is more leaning towards it being cancer, she told me there would be. MDT meeting to discuss whether to go straight to surgery or repeat FNA (if second FNA came back with same results then we will be doing surgery anyway). I had a CT scan of my lungs Wednesday and a MRI scan of my neck yesterday. I'm now waiting for an appointment to come through to discuss what they have decided to do.

Has anyone else been told they have thyroid cells in their lymph nodes? What else could cause the thyroid cells to go there unless it was cancer? This has been ongoing since end of august now I'm so fed up of waiting to find out what is happening.

Thank you

  • Hi, I did. I found one enlarged lymph node in my neck in March this year and after a couple of FNA's they found thyroid cells in the lymph. I had no obvious areas of cancer on my thyroid on Ultrasound so they 'assumed' it was thyroid cancer based on the presence of thyroid calls in my lymph. In August I had a total thyroidectomy and 50 lymph nodes removed on one side of my neck. When the histology came back I had 7 tumours in my thyroid and 11 affected lymph nodes. Papillary thyroid cancer. I then went on to have radioactive iodine treatment in October.  My team were as sure as they could be without having the proof that the presence of thyroid cells in my lymph node meant it would be thyroid cancer and they were right. I'm not really sure if there could be any other cause for this, no other option was ever discussed with me. I hope it turns out to be another reason for you. But please be assured that even if it turns out to be cancer you are very much in the worst part of your journey now. I hated waiting for news and a plan. It was almost a relief when they told me what they wanted to do because there was an end to the not knowing. Positive thoughts for you.

  • Thank you for your reply I appreciate it, I feel like I would be the same in being relieved! I had my ultrasound in October which found the thyroid nodule and the several enlarged lymph nodes and I was reallY hoping I'd get some definite answers from the biopsy as they took 5 samples. I'm going to chase up with the surgeons secretary on Monday. When I last met with surgeon she explained about neck dissection and thyroidectomy etc so I think that is looking like it will be what happens but may need another biopsy first. I agree waiting is definitely the hardest part, I just want to know what is happening and when so I can prepare myself x

  • Hi I also found a lump in my neck end of June after my first FNA and ultrasound it came back u3 nodule and intermediate. I was referred to a consultant to discuss hemi when I got there to discuss this surgery I was told they upgraded my results and I had thyroid cancer. I had another FNA done and a ct scan.  I had my thyroidectomy and neck dissection in September they removed 49 lymth nodes 20 were affected. I have my RAI next week my cancer was papillary carcinoma the tumor it's self was only 10mm in the left side and 7mm in right side. I was told before my diagnosis that I had a multi nodular goiter. The waiting is deffo the hardest part but the nhs were brilliant I got diagnosed the 9th Aug n op was 8th Sept so pretty quick. I hope you get good news hun x
