Partial Thyroidectomy

Hi,

I just thought I'd post to see if anyone had had a similar experience to myself for some reassurance, guidance etc.

A shadow was picked up on my thyroid 6 years ago and investigated with a ultrasound and fine needle biopsy, which I struggled with massively. I was incredibly uncomfortable and in huge amounts of pain. My results came back inconclusive. I was then "forgotten" about and never heard back from anyone for about 2 years. I then had a panicked phone call from consultants receptionist "we are so sorry we forgot you etc" and got booked for an appointment. My consultant offered to take the lump out with surgery and test it. After some discussion with nurse we agreed that I'd try the fine needle biopsy again because of my age and lack of symptoms. I also keloid scar so wanted to avoid surgery for as long as we could. This biopsy again failed after they didn't use any anaesthetic on me (I was absolutely terrified after this) and was inconclusive. I was sent again for another one to a fantastic surgeon and had an ultra sound again too. The lump had grown this time. The results came back as benign and I was promised that I would have a scan and blood test yearly. The pandemic then hit and I wasn't seen for 3 years.

Fast forward to January 2022 and I am in pain everyday with my neck, its swollen, I can't breathe when I lie down and I'm struggling with swallowing food. I contact my doctors to find I need to be rereferred. I waited until November. My consultant was unable to access all results as it had been so long since I've been seen and suggested another biopsy to which I said absolutely not, and explained why. She fitted me in for an emergency ultrasound. Results came back within 10 minutes to find I had grown another tumour behind my existing one and this one was harder to see. She explained all routes including biopsy and a promise to keep scanning me. I went for surgery because of the symptoms I was experiencing and the growth of this second lump. She explained that this was an extreme route for a benign condition but did say she couldn't say what the other lump was without testing it.

I am sure in my decison but wanted to hear experiences and opinions from others? Thank you!

  • Hi there

Just wanted to drop you a message and to say that I too would have chosen the same route as you if I where in your position.

It will reduce your stress and anxiety having these lumps removed and taking away the fear of testing for you. Not only that if it is restricting your breathing it needs sorting.

I had a total thyroidectomy due to Cancer so can understand your concerns.

    Wishing you all the best
