Raised CA 125 over 100. Trying not to catastrophise

Hi everyone, Just joined today after a nightmare week. Having surgery for large complex ovarian cyst that was only discovered a week ago. Ca 125 came back at over 100 which has me sick with worry. I was on day 3 of my cycle when the bloods were done however and I do have large cyst. They do not think it is presenting as OC but rather a cyst that has twisted on itself and is causing pain and inflammation but I cannot seem to get the number out of my head. Has anyone had a high ca 125 and not had OC? (ovarian c)

I am going out of my mind

Thank you

  • Hi Charlie, this was me earlier in the year. I went to the GP because of left-sided pelvic pain and requested a CA125 test which came back at 72.

I was put on a 2 week wait pathway for an ultrasound which didn't show anything unusual and was sent for an MRI which confirmed severe endometriosis. I was so panicky and anxious while waiting for tests and results so I know how you're feeling, but please do try to keep in mind that the CA125 is incredibly non-specific for ovarian cancer in pre-menopausal women, and lots of gynae conditions that aren't cancer can cause elevation of this marker. I hope everything turns out okay for you and you've got lots of support while you're waiting.

  • Thanks so much for your reply,

It's just a very worrying time and I suffer with massive health anxiety as it is so this is basically like facing my worst fear coming true. I'm just hoping that when they take out the cyst and have it looked at that it wil be benign but I don't know what to think. Trying to stay off google as I haven't been eating or sleeping and I need to mind myself or I'll crack up! x

  • I should have updated... it all happened so fast. Had laparoscopic surgery 10 days ago, surgeon said it looked like endometriosis like a cyst full of blood but the weird thing is I've never had any symptoms of endo so I'm a bit lost

recovery has been rough... but I can cope once I know it's benign. Unfortunately I won't have those results for a while yet.. don't know when ... but I think it's positive I mean he said he thinks it's endo , a " chocolate cyst"

had tube and ovary removed too... I'm actually still in shock over the whole thing. I just don't understand where it all came from or how when have never had issues before

hope you get some answers yourself too and soon

  • Hi, thank you for updating your story. I'm waiting for my gynea appointment and going out of my mind with worry. I have 8cm cyst on my ovary and CA125 came back with level 398... I'm also on 2 week referral path. How long did you have to wait for your surgery after your gynea appointment? I'm considering going private as I'm worried it will be a long wait.

  • Hi Lampy, don't panic, I was in an absolute heap. I went private and pulled a few strings (family are medical) but also I think it was rushed through as I was in so much pain I couldn't function. I had the operation 2 weeks after the appointment

got the result after xmas- endometrioma, which is strange as I don't have endo or never knew I had as had no symptoms! no cancer found, was so relieved.

It is an awful ordeal to go through and I think I have a bit of PTSD after the whole thing to be honest! but just glad it wasn't anything sinister. Don't worry about the CA!25- that's what freaked me out the most but it turns out lots of conditions can cause it to rise- I hadn't known that!! do keep us updated and don't panic- I lost so much weight as was so stressed but have piled it back on now oh well

best of luck , feel free to ask any questions, glad to help

  • Thank you for responding charlieb. And I'm so pleased for you. I'm spending most of my current time searching for positive stories to keep my anxiety at bay. It's good to hear you also went private with positive result. I think I'll do the same. I'm so tired with pain in my lower back, groin and bloated belly and all I want to do is just to have this op so that I can go back to normal.

I have my private appointment tomorrow evening so should find out next steps then. Hopefully

  • That's exactly what I did when I was going through this, I kept scouring for positive outcomes! It was all just so unexpected and out of the blue as I've never had any such issues before, just woke up one day in terrible pain and it went from there. Good luck, at least you don't have too much longer to wait now, the waiting was the worst bit for me

  • So I had my tubes tied a few years ago and then 2 years ago I had an endrometeial ablation, I've never had a period since! I went to the gp with sickness and bloating and she took bloods, fast forward 2 days and I got my results back CA-125 Eisinophil count very high 1.2 (it should be below 0.4) and serum C relative Protien at 6mg (it should be below 4) so as you can imagine I'm freaking the hell out! With 4 kids my youngest only 5! I'm booked in for a scan in 6 days and the gp/nurse keep telling me it can be for a lot of reasons. But all 3 together is very worrying. Does anyone have anything similar or any positive/negative stories that you would like to share? Tia
