Noone is willing to preform colonoscopy as I'm pregnant

Hello, I'm a 25 year old female and have had soft/loose and sometimes runny stools with black bits and tiny bits of mucus since September. I rushed to A&E on Sunday as seen quite a bit of fresh blood in the toilet bowl surrounding my feaces with back and stomach cramps on and off all day. I had seen dots of red in my stool for the past week. I have seen a GP multiple times. Normal bloods, normal calprotectine, slightly raised QFIT of 13, did a follow up one as got told by a specialist at the hospital not to dip the stick in the black bit as its probably my pregnacare multivitim iron giving the possitive, and it came back negative. However I just feel like something isn't right, I have even contacted private surgeons and it seems noone will preform a colonoscopy on a 32 weeks pregnant lady. Its annoying because when I originally raised the issue, I was in my second trimester, so really they should have preformed a colonoscopy then instead of asking me to retake the QFIT. I don't know where to turn to now as I've spoken to my DR and apparently A&E sent a referal to the specialist again who will most likely only preform a flexible sigmoidoscopy, which only looks at part of the bowl. Please help!

  • Hello,

You are literally in the same situation as myself! I'm 33 weeks at the weekend. Since august/September Iv had bits of mucus in stool. Bright red blood on my stool, stomach cramps, gassy, loud tummy, constipation then I went though a stage of softer stool but not runny. I had a stool calprotectin sample done and it came back high, my liver was elevated too. Then I was taken into hospital with upper right rib pain and they did a covid test which was positive. My go reffered me urgently for a colonoscopy but the consultant point blank refused I was so gutted. The worry has taken over my pregnancy. It's my last baby and I really wanted to end this pregnancy. I have to wait till the baby is here to have the colonoscopy.

My dr and pregnancy consultant both said it was safe to have while pregnant! Which is even more fustrating.

iv since don't another stool sample 6 weeks after my last 2 and my inflammation level is back to normal so is my liver so now they are blaming covid! But I still have a dodgy tummy, still have the blood and mucus! It's really worrying me and I can't help think the worse! I'm panicking they will just leaving me and something is wrong and it will be too late by the time I'm seen again!

  • Hello, I'm sorry to hear that you are going through this s*** at the worst possible time where no one can really make a diagnosis, like myself. My first pregnancy was great, I had no issues. This pregnancy, I feel like I live between GP and hospital! I've even contacted the a clinic in London, their surgeon wouldn't even preform a colonoscopy on a pregnant lady and they're meant to be the best in the world for private health care! I wonder why they can't preform an ultrasound or MRI? I'm going to ask (if I actually get to see the colonrectal surgeon still heard nothing from them since 'referal'). Have you asked about MRIs/Ultrasound?

To top everything off I was at the DRs with painful Piles yesterday (hopefully thats why I had a lot of blood on Sunday) the A&E team were so useless they didn't even examin my anus just presumed it was all vaginal bleeding and sent me straight to the maternity ward.

I pray that everything will be okay for you,

    the best. X
