Hard lump below/behind my ear for 4 years.

First of all, I'd like to preface that I'm 18 and have had no prior medical emergencies besides one when I was born. I have severe health anxiety, and for around 4 years have had a lump below my ear on the left side of my head. My mother often told me it was a swollen gland, and it is true that it seems to get bigger when I am under the weather, but recently I have noticed it has perhaps gotten bigger without any warning. It isn't a gland directly behind my ear, but a lump below in the crevace between my jaw and my neck. I can feel that on the other side of my neck, maybe deeper down, there could be a similar lump, but if there is one it feels much more embeded in my neck and quite a lot smaller.

I've also noticed over the years I get a certain pain in that area whenever I eat something sweet on that side of my mouth, although I have no idea if this is related.

I am having difficulty with long waiting times at clinics, so I'm not sure whether I should go to see a GP or not. Any help/reasurrance would be appreciated.

Thankyou

  • Hello anonymous123123

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing health worries at the moment. If you've never seen a GP about this lump then it would be sensible to get it checked. It's certainly also worth speaking with your GP about the health anxiety that you're experiencing and seeking some support to manage this as well.

In the meantime, you might find it helpful to have a look at this information on the NHS website which has some tips and advice for managing health anxiety.

I hope things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

Have you been to see your GP yet? I have similar symptoms as you. I'm 19 and I've had a movable lump below my ear that when I press it, it seems to disappear behind my jaw then reappear straight away. I don't get pain when I eat/drink sweet things but it's like a sour feeling.

Im convinced that mine alternates in size but I'm not sure. I first went to my doctor 5 years ago and with a recent ear infection I remembered about it. So i felt again and it was still there. I booked another GP appointment with the same doctor as last time, as I can't stop worrying about it, and he said that I can have an ultrasound if I wanted to.

Long story short, I've been for an ultrasound today and I'm waiting on the doctor to phone me this week.

    Hoping you're well.
