Waiting for results

Hi,

I had surgery last week to remove a 17cm mass in my abdomen, it was emergency surgery due to the pain and during surgery they found it had ruptured and due to what they found they also removed my appendix and took some biopsies.

I'm recovering from surgery now and waiting for the results. I have just had to call the outpatient unit to cancel a pre-arranged appointment since I've now had the surgery and was told that they could see a telephone appointment has been arranged for the 1st December. On my discharge notes it did say that a follow up call would be arranged following an MDT discussion following my histology.

My question is, does the fact a telephone appointment has already been arranged mean that my results are already back? Also, as my mind is in overdrive at the moment I'm wondering if this is a good thing or bad, ie, if my results were clear wouldn't they let me know straight away or is the fact the appointment isn't for another week mean they have to have a conversation and discuss care plan.

I know no-one could give me a definite answer but wondering on people's thoughts. I'm pretty much already expecting the worst following conversations I've had whilst in the hospital.

Thank you

  • Hello Ally1006

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently needed surgery. I hope that your recovery is going smoothly and that you're being well supported by family and friends at this time.

We know that most people have to wait a little while for biopsy results but sometimes results do come back quickly. The speed with which they're returned isn't an indicator of the results so whilst it's natural to be feeling anxious try to stay positive. Results are typically discussed by an MDT regardless so the fact that your case is going before the team isn't something to worry about. For now, concentrate on recovering from the operation.

If you think it may help to chat things through with one of our nruses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice and support they can ahead of your results appointment.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for replying. Everyone around me is so positive that it isn't cancer and I'm hoping for the same, it's just really hard not to think of the worst!
