Hello their

I have had a very suspicious mole for a while,  to cut a long story short, I was referred to the dermatology department, where the Doctor inspected the mole and told me just from looking at it that it is a melonoma., i did double check with him by saying "so it's deffinatly a melonoma" to which he replied yes. I then had the mole removed 4 days later, after they removed the mole they asked me to book an appointment for 6 weeks time to get my results. 6 weeks is a long time, This was nearly 3 weeks ago now. And I am quite anxious, am I right in thinking no news is good news, and if anything was wrong they would call me in sooner?.. also do you think he could have been mistaken and maybe it wasn't a melonoma.

Thank you

Jenny

  • Hi Jenny,

Sorry you are going through this worrying time. Dermatologists are experts but when it comes to melanoma the only 100% sure diagnosis is from a biopsy, not the consultant's naked eye or dermascope which only 'Lead' them towards a possible diagnosis. So in a very small minority of cases dermatologists can be wrong and the mole is dysplastic (precancerous). Try not to fixate on what they said and wait for the results.

Results take differing amounts of time at each hospital and they don't have a hierarchy so bad results don't necessarily come back quicker than clear results. Playing the waiting game is the hardest part of all this so find a distraction to get through the next few weeks. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
