Waiting for test results

Hi,

I'm 24 and my mum is 60. My has a lump and it's been confirmed she has a mass and tumor in her neck but we are still waiting to find out if it's cancer. How long did it take for you to get your results. They did the biopsies and ultrasound about a week and a half ago and since then she has had an MRI and CT scan under the 2 week wait thing. The CT scan was the final thing and that was 2 days ago. How long did you wait. I'm terrified.

  • Hello Ilovemymum24 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

Waiting for test results is often the hardest thing and I am sorry you are having to deal with what can often feel like an endless wait. Biopsy results normally take 1-2 weeks as do ultrasound scan results.

Similarly, as you can read on our website, MRI scan results will also take 1-2 weeks normally and the same waiting time generally applies to CT scans. All these are obviously indications and variations and delays can occur but if you haven't heard anything back after a couple of weeks, I would definitely get in touch with your mum's GP or the hospital to find out more and chase these important results.

It's normal to be terrified and I am keeping everything crossed that everything turns out fine for your mum. There are some helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news. In the meantime, try to stay well away from the super unreliable Dr Google as this will only bring up the worst possible cases and make you worry even more.

    Best wishes,
