Ovarian cancer worry

Hello

I'm sorry to probably waffle on a little but I'm concerned over a health scare and was just looking for a way to vent. Sorry if its a long post but I want to go back to the start...

Back in 2019 I suffered 10 days with terrible left sided ovulation pain although this was outside of my ovulation window, after 10 days it just went so I assumed a small cyst and thought no more of it and it didn't happen again until June this year.

End of June again I wasn't ovulating but i started to experience the same pain in the left side, not bad enough to take painkillers though, sometimes would be there all day, other days I would just feel it in small sharp bursts that lasted half a second and some days i could go 2 or 3 days without feeling anything, this carried on until the beginning of August and then it just stopped again,I know I should have seen the doctor but again I assumed another cyst especially as the pain wasn't bad enough for pain killers and didn't interfere with daily life, was just always there.

12th October it came back around my ovulation date so I thought that's normal but after ovulation it stayed and again following the same pattern of some days I would feel nothing and other days it's there all days and other times it comes in small sharp bursts and I do notice it more around ovulation and periods. I did however manage to get a doctors appointment yesterday, she felt my stomach and said she can't feel anything untoward but now I'm worrying as I've had 4 children I do have a little "overhang" and I'm sure she didn't press under the overhang so I'm worried she could have missed something or would she have still noticed anything just be pressing on the top? I answered all her questions, she could tell I don't have any bloating,my stomach is very soft, I don't get full quickly, still have an appetite,no bleeding unless on period, sex isn't painful and toilet wise everything okay (I do have bouts of diarrhoea but I've been diagnosed many years ago with an IBD so this is normal for me) I do have some back pain but again I suffer with sciatica so this is normal for me and nothing new.

After examining me and listening to my answers she said she can not hear any red flags and wasn't concerned but she wants to do an ultrasound to check my ovaries although she did say she doesn't expect to find anything but as the pain feels like it's ovary related she wants to be sure so I felt reassured and more positive as I convinced myself it would be bad,she also requested blood work just to make sure nothing else was going on and this was fine until I got home and read the blood form..she has requested the blood test ca125 which i know checks for protein relating to ovarian cancer, she never mentioned this and now I'm worried again thinking that she does indeed think I could have cancer despite her saying the opposite as I don't understand why she would order it if she honestly thought i was okay. My husband still believes everything is fine as she said 3 times she doesn't think its anything serious and these tests are just a precaution and for peace of mind which im glad about but I'm also so confused and very worried.

My periods are normal (I bleed for 3 days, stop for 1/2 days and then start light bleeding for another day) this is normal for me and I've always for many years suffered terrible ovulation pain in the left side but rarely suffer period pain/cramps. I know I don't have any other symptoms of OC but I'm still worried.

Im 42 and have 4 children, don't take the pill, don't smoke etc and only ever had 1 sexual partner.

Any words of comfort/advice would be great. Bloods are tomorrow and il receive a scan appointment in the post soon.

Many thanks xx

Ps, sorry for long post, thanks for staying till the end

  • Just an update..

The scanning center just called and they have a cancellation for tomorrow so I accepted and should have bloods and scan results back by Friday. Feeling very scared right now especially as its my daughters 18th tomorrow and her party Saturday, not sure how i will cope if it's bad news

  • I'm glad you are getting seen quickly and hopefully that will mean you get  answers and reassurance quickly as well. I think the blood test is fairly standard - but especially if they are perhaps expecting to see cysts on the ultrasound as there are different types of cyst and some do just come and go on their own. I've had the same sort of pain , like you describe and also on the left side but had other symptoms too so I was referred for blood tests and ultrasound. They found multiple cysts on both ovaries with the largest on the left at 5.5cm and I ended up with CT and MRI scans too before they were declared 'benign-looking'. I have to go back for another scan in January (6 month mark) just to make sure they've gone . Try and keep yourself busy and concentrate on your daughter and all the excitement of her 18th and I'll hope you get a good outcome

  • Totally just a precautionary thing. I really would listen to what the doctor said and not try to analyze the blood test request. I know quite a few women who have had OC and they all had bowel symptoms and a feeling of fullness. I personally think you would have had further symptoms if the pain from 2019 was anything to do with cancer - sounds like you might just have cysts.

  • Thank you

The pain I had I 2019 lasted 10 days and I didn't get it again until June this year so not sure if its the same or not. I've always suffered really bad ovulation pains in the left side so again not sure if its connected to that. I don't feel pressure or full and not bloated, can eat normally etc. Just so worried,I keepntrying to remember what the doctor said but can't shake this uneasy feeling. Something must be wrong to be getting the pains. Just feels like constant ovulation pains or like a stitch in that area but not too painful as I don't have to take painkillers but just always there niggling away, worse when I bend or walk. Thanks again for the replies x

  • Your symptoms sound exactly like mine. I have had similar pain for the past year almost every few weeks, a couple of months ago I had a  2 week episode of severe left sided pelvic pain so bad I could barely walk as it started to run down my thigh.. I have always thought it was ovarian cysts. I had blood tests last month ca125 and full blood count.. and internal and external scan.

I was convinced it would be positive for ovarian cancer. However my CA125 was normal and my scam surprisingly showed only a uterine fibroid (previous cysts were gone) Apparently the uterine fibroid is not enough to cause the episodes of pain I frequently get.

So I was sent to have an additional smear which came back yesterday as HPV positive and high grade severe dyskarsosis. I have a colposcopy tomorrow and I wondering if maybe the precancerous cells could be the cause of the pain?

  • I had my scan yesterday, she said my left ovary is slightly bigger than the right but not enough to be causing pain. Everything else looks normal,no sign of any cysts, lumps or anything to be concerned about, uterus looks healthy, didn't mention cervix so I'm not sure if that was checked but my routinely smear test is due in Feb. She said my doctor may want to do more tests to find cause of pain but said it could be bowel related as i do have a IBD. Whilst I'm relived the scan was normal,I'm still waiting on the ca125 blood results to come back and I'm worried they will still show something.

Thank you for all the replies xx

  • Just to say I received my blood results today.

My ca125 test came back as "18"  can someone examine what this means please as I'm a little confused. Thank you

  • Hi,

I have just googled that and it said 'Normal range is 0-35'
