Experience of lung cancer?

Hi, I'm new here and looking for advice / support. Having been through a whirlwind of tests so far in rapid succession (X Ray, CT scan, full lung functioning test and PET scan) I'm now in the frame for an MRI scan and biopsy on my lung next week. This all started in the middle of October, with a random phone call ffrom an A and E Consultant, who had seen some opacity on my lung from an X Ray taken in August. I'm very anxious and frightened of what is coming next. They've obviously found something, but I have to wait for the results of the biopsy to be sure what it is. They are sayng it could be (a) an infection (b) benign of (c) cancer. I've been given a rough time scale for the next procedures, but have found the testing experience really scary and stressful so far. And of course the waiting to figure out what is wrong is unbearable. Does anyone have any advice for me? I'm trying to journal, keep positive, take one day at a time and eat and drink to make myself as strong as possible for what to come but I am finding trying to look after my mental health the most challenging bit right now. Any advice from someone who has been down this particular rabbit hole would be good!

  • Hello Hellsbells and welcome to the Cancer Chat forum.

I'm sorry to hear about all the tests you've been having and for how scary and stressful you have found the process so far, but I hope it helps to know that you are not alone as many of our members have been through this so they will definitely understand what you're going through at the moment, and hopefully some of them will be along soon to offer you their thoughts and advice.

I hope some of the tips given in this article and on the NHS Every Mind Matters website will come in useful as well but if you would prefer to speak to someone about all of this, you can give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to support you during this anxious time.

We're wishing you all the best for next week HellsBells and will have our fingers crossed for a good outcome.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Thanks Steph, only just found your post!

So, I've had my operation to remove my unwelcome visitors and seem to be reccovering well. However, I am back to the waiting game, I think I'll get my results next week. At least then, I'll know what I am dealing with.

I'm actually finding it helpful to reply to others who are going through similar experiences and offering them some reassurance and advice. It, at least feels constructive!

Trying to hold on to hope, and take one day at a time. I'm just ready for someone to tell me I can get off this medical rollercoaster!

I've also reached out for psychological support to help me get my head around it all, so all positive steps to get support in place. Thanks for replying to me, I appreciate it. Helen xx
