Help regarding my dad and potential diagnosis

Hi everyone,

I hope that my post is allowed here.

I am concerned regarding my dad (82). He's had unexplained weight loss for the last 3 months, roughly 8kg and has lost his appetite completely. Other than this he is fit and well with no other medical issues. He went to the GP who after doing some tests sent him for a CT abdomen/chest/pelvis. This was around 10 days ago.

He's now been asked to go for a biopsy this week as well as giving a blood and urine sample. I asked him if he had been told that they had found something on his CT scan but he said no? He also told me he's going to see a new Dr and gave me the name but hasn't met him before and doesn't know what it is for, when I looked him up he works in Oncology... surely you wouldn't go to see an oncologist unless there was a strong suspicion/confirmation that he had cancer?

My dad does not seem bothered about this at all but I'm not 100% sure he fully understands what is going on and he's never been majorly I'll before. Or I'm just overthinking things.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what could be happening?

Thank you.

  • Hi ack13,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I understand this must be a worrying time. Unfortunately it's very difficult to advise on what the situation may be. It sounds like they're doing a number of tests to work out what's going on and I'm sure that once these are complete you'll be able to get the information you need - and I hope that it's not too long to wait for this.

I know the waiting and the uncertainty is tough so I hope you find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
