Blood in stool please help :((

I am so anxious because today my stool was a normal brown but then there were red bits in it and then it turned the toilet water red so there must have been a lot of blood :/

I am 18 years old (nearly 19) and I am just so scared because this is the first time this has ever happened. I did have a red beetroot wrap with beetroot in it yesterday but tbh i feel like it must have been actual blood since I have eaten beetroot before and it hasn't made the toilet water completely red. Does anyone have advice??

  • Hello Bethan,

sounds like normal effect for having eaten beetroot, but you will soon find out for sure over the coming days. If it was blood you will have seen this on the toilet paper when you wiped, and that would be the giveaway.

Try not to stress too much, just keep an eye out over the coming days,

  • I didn't see any blood on the toilet paper, it was just in the toilet. It was just scary because it made all the toilet water red even though it didn't even look like there was that much blood in my actual stool.

  • Just wanted to say that even if it is blood, there are many possible reasons for this, some of them quite minor, like an infection or hemorrhoids. At your age, cancer would be very unlikely, though there are other things like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's that would probably need to be checked for, if this continues.

As others have said, just keep an eye on it. If it continues to happen over the next few days, then make an appointment with your doctor.

  • I have high blood pressure and drink and eat loads of beetroot. I can attest it absolutely turns your poo and everything else red! Given your age I reckon you're fine, but please get a specialist to check you out, just to be sure.

  • There's a very very small risk of ut being more than just the beetroot you've eaten.I once had a major panic at how red my then baby sons nappy was, then I realised he had drunk a ton of blackcurrant Ribena and it had turned his poo red.

Keep an eye on it anyway just to feel more reassured.

    Bless you x
