Lump under chin - Dr not even looking

Hi,

I have had a lump under my chin for several months now and I recently decided to go speak to my GP about it. I have a strong family history of breast cancer (all but 2 people also had it spread to the lymph nodes) and in the past decade had someone diagnosed with lymphoma. Obviously this makes me very aware and nervous about weird lumps, bumps and swollen lymph nodes.

The lump under my chin is around 2.5cm wide, is very firm, is slightly movable and recently has been causing pain/tenderness in my jaw bone where the lump touches. The pain in the jaw doesn't affect talking or eating, but is tender-moderately painful to the touch. It is a rather odd position and it almost requires me to physically move it from under my jaw to get a good feel of it. I have not been ill or feeling unwell in anyway since I have noticed the lump expect for night sweats, awful fatigue and breathless but this could also be attributed to my under active thyroid

When I contacted my GP I was only able to have a phone appointment (which is annoying anyway as I am hard of hearing) and when I explained what the lump is like as well as my family history he just said I was probably catching a cold because I sound congested. I explained to him I always sound congested (I have a nasal voice and enlarged adenoids) but he simply said I was being paranoid and told me to just generally keep up my health and take over the counter medication when my cold is noticable.

I have never had trouble with this GP before. My sister also saw the same GP when she had a breast lump last year and he was nothing but understanding and even rushed her consultation when he heard our family history.

I understand swollen lymph nodes are very common. I also know what mine have felt like. I had very frequent ear and throat infections as a child so my glands and lymph nodes were swollen a lot, but this doens't feel like that. It feels different.

Is my GP right? Am I being paranoid because of my family history or does this sound like something I could try and see another GP about?

  • I had a similar issue. Doctor ignored me for better part of a year about a lump on my neck. For me it was spread from breast cancer. Has no other symptoms.

Lumps are normally nothing scary but its always best to get lumped checked out, so I'd consider speaking to another GP.

Is the lump painful? Has it grown at all?

  • That's my concern. I've had multiple people in my immediate and extended family that have had breast cancer spread to lymph nodes and my aunt was diagnosed with lymphoma about 7-8 years ago so it's quite worrisome!

The lump isn't painful but it has grow .  When I first noticed it it was about 1cm and now it is about 2.5cm. It has been there for about 5-6 months as an estimate.
