Mole biopsy results.

Hi,

I had a mole excision on the 14th October to rule out nodular melanoma. On the day they booked my follow up with the consultant who I first saw about the mole. My appointment is Monday and I have been so anxious! I've phoned a couple of times but was told differently each time. One lady told me they will phone if it's sinister but the dermatologist likes to give results in person and then another told me I will be told on the 14th and she isn't able to give me the results. My partners mum has asked her sons oncologist and he has said if there's anything to worry about they would have got me back in sooner.

So I guess I'm wondering how people have found the process? Do you know before the appointment if it's Melonama or would they be happy just to wait the 4 weeks to give me the results.
Should I relax knowing that nobody has called me prior to my appointment this Monday? Arghhh I'm overthinking this way to much! Help!

Thanks : )

  • Hi,

It's easier to tell you the usual route to biopsy and results for a possible melanoma.

Firstly - they can't tell you what it is at your first appointment, only a biopsy can do that and the results are arranged either face to face (good or bad, dermatology prefer to do it this way. There in no chance they can tell you on the day it's removed - it needs to be sent to histology where they give the result to the dermatologist a week or two later. So you won't find out on the day it's removed but they may make a comment as to how it looks - remember though that only the biopsy is the definitive diagnosis. The average wait at most hospitals is 4 to 6 weeks for results,  due to Covid backlog. Try to keep busy whilst awaiting results and don't use Dr Google.

  • Thankyou for you reply, that does clear things up.
The follow up was booked on the day of biopsy so must be face to face results as like you say they would not have known to book me in otherwise.

The stress of this is really effecting my diabetes and I forgot to ask about results process on the day so thankyou again : )

  • My friend and I have both had mole excisions in the last few weeks. I received my results through the post today and have been discharged as my mole was found to be benign, five weeks after the excision. I feel so releived!

My friend received an appointment through the post after six weeks past her procedure, and after the appointment has been referred for a lymph node biopsy.

    Good luck.

  • That's great I'm sure that's a massive relief for you! Sorry your friend didn't have the same results though. Wishing her the best of luck with the biopsy

My appointment has been cancelled as my results are not in yet. I just had a phone call and they are chasing pathology and as soon as they are back they will squeeze me in.

So that's me now waiting for either a letter or phone call. Im gutted I had myself all prepared for today too
